I think that almost every day. Whatever our faults and failings, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be.

Iran, USA, Canada, it makes no difference when religious fundamentalists are in charge. If there was a survey of Americans and the question was how to deal with adultery and stoning was one of the options a certain percentage of US citizens would check that box.

However, Iran is very enlightened in it's method, since one good stone could put the person out of their misery. During the reign of Tamerlain male adulterers were wrapped in a rug with maggots. Women were put in a cloth bag with cats and people would beat the bag.

I thought he was being sarcastic? Could be wrong I suppose, it's tough to gauge e-sarcasm sometimes.

Canada.
Too cold. Too polite.

Plus, posting speed limits in "KmPH" makes me slightly queasy.

Unless you move to Quebec probably won't hear french at all......

As far as the metric system, got to catch up sooner or later ( I mean, the US, Burma and Liberia.....lol)

Unlike trying grasp imperial units, metric is pretty easy....

Iran changes Ashtiani stoning sentence for adultery to hanging

Iran changes Ashtiani stoning sentence for adultery to hanging - CSMonitor.com

A Government just runned by animals !!

That Ashtiani was forced by torture to confess , is for her lawyer as well as human rights organizations is beyond question. "The TV station that broadcast Ashtianis confession is completely " under the control of the intelligence service , Mohammad Mostafaei said from his exile in Norway. After he had made Ashtianis case worldwide publicity, was the lawyer been sought on arrest warrants and had to flee from Iran. " The aim of the TV reports , is someone to publicly discredit and justify the lies , the illegal actions of the government , " thus " Mostafaei CNN . "

Well if that's the case I take my comment back. If not, however, the comment stands.

If one could choose the method of a death sentence (regardless of the injustice of the sentence):
  1. Death by stoning
  2. Death by maggots (eaten to death, or dying of infection or disease)
  3. Death by cats scratching (bleeding to death)
I would saying that stoning would be the most humane. I would think being eaten by maggots could take days or weeks.

Unless they used really small stones! I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Of all the words you could use to describe the state-sanctioned killing of a human being by throwing rocks at them, "enlightened" is what you went with....

The size of the stones used during the execution are required to be . . . not so large that they would kill a woman too quickly, nor so small that they would fail to cause serious injury or pain .

One day, long ago in a town in Israel a woman was about to be stoned by the people. Upon hearing this, Jesus Christ went in front of the crowd and said,"He who has no sin, cast the first stone." Next thing you know, a frail woman with wrinkled skin beamed a stone at the woman's head. Jesus next reply was,"Mom!".

Taliban stone couple for adultery in AfghanistanBy AMIR SHAH, AP
posted: 1 HOUR 48 MINUTES , Afghanistan -Taliban militants in northern Afghanistan stoned a young couple to death for adultery, which a rights group said was the first confirmed use of the punishment here since the hardline Islamist regime was ousted in 2001.
The Taliban-ordered killing comes at a time when international rights groups have raised worries that attempts to negotiate with the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan could mean a step backward for human rights in the country. When the Islamist extremists ruled Afghanistan, women were not allowed to leave their houses without a male guardian, and public killings for violations of their harsh interpretation of the Quran were common.
This weekend's stoning appeared to arise from an affair between a married man and a single woman in Kunduz province's Dasht-e-Archi district.
The woman, Sadiqa, was 20 years old and engaged to another man, said the Kunduz provincial police chief, Gen. Abdul Raza Yaqoubi. Her lover, 28-year-old Qayum, left his wife to run away with her, and the two had holed up in a friend's house five days ago, said district government head, Mohammad Ayub Aqyar.

They were discovered by Taliban operatives on Sunday and stoned to death in front a crowd of about 150 men, Aqyar said.
First the woman was brought out and stoned, then the man a half an hour later, Aqyar said. He decried the punishment, which he said was ordered by two local Taliban commanders.
A spokesman for the provincial government also condemned the act.

Enlightened-humane are two different things. Given fundamentalist mindset I would say that stoning is more humane and the Iranian fundamentalist are more enlightened than others who carry out less humane method of death sentences. I should add that this sentence not enlightened in my opinion, nor is stoning humane.

Enlightened-humane... Frankly, I'm not sure what the standard would be today in this world. The US has the death penalty and we torture people. However, we don't sentence people to death with torture. Is that humane but not enlightened? Or enlightened and not humane?

I gotta go.
