Default Now that combat operations are over in Iraq is it a good time to reflect what has bee
To date we have lost over 4400 U.S. troops, aproxamatly 32,000 with brain injury and over 100,000 wounded. Is the U.S. better off now ? Is Iraq and her people better off ? Is the region better and more stable now ? Are the people of Iraq and it's government up to the job of defending independence ? What does the future hold for Iraq ? What influence will an independent Iraq have on it's neighbors ?

I think the whole "Combat Operations are Over" is 10 lbs of political posturing wrapped in a 5 lb sack. According to the Pentagon, US troops will continue accompanying Iraqi army elements on patrol. Some of those patrols will inevitably result in...........combat. I'll start to believe in such rhetoric when the last American soldier leaves Iraqi soil, not when it's politically expedient for an increasingly unpopular US President* who is looking for a silver lining to something before November.

*I voted for him and possibly will again, but I don't like what he's doing here.

I agree with the above but I was thinking about the ability for Iraq to remain viable for the foreseeable future. Are they so weak and divided that Iran could sweep in and take over in a couple of years ? Will this war disrupt the balance of power and make Iran even stronger ? At this time Iraq still doesn't have leadership.

A lot of al qaeda training camps are gone and their members killed.
People don't bother. This is clearly one of the uninformed who thinks that Al Qaeda had a presence in Iraq when we invaded.

It's so sad that almost half of the country actually believed this.

Cherrybomb-before you post-try doing a little reading and acually knowing your subject.

The old dictator & his kids ain't killing and raping people in the streets anylonger. The mass killings are over. His strikes on other countries are over. A lot of al qaeda training camps are gone and their members killed. We will be here for many years, we can do many things in Iraq, its our strong hold in the mid-east. Now that Iran & Pakistan have nukes , we must keep a close eye on them. It had to be done at this time, anylonger and Iraq has nukes. It was a brilliant strategic military move on our part. By no stretch of imagination was Iraq a peacful nation.

Yes Iraq is much, much better off. And YES, we are to.

Before we invaded a country that posed no threat to us Iraq and Iran sort of balanced themselves out. Each was afraid of the other. Now Iran has much more influence in the region. It also showed that we were a paper tiger that could not take care of business in Afghanistan because we were up to our necks in Iraq. We have lost in excess of 4,400 military troops and over 50,000 wounded and no one knows how many will have mental problems. Of the three countries in the Axis of Evil Bush attacked the one that had no viable nuclear program. Way to go Bush. I hope I'm wrong but I believe that if things remain the same Iraq will fall to Iran within five years and all we did will be a waste.

You are a rolling contradiction with your caring about the Iraq people and advocating killing all Muslims in another post. It's all about the oil. We should treat energy independence like the national emergency that it is and get the hell out of that mess and let them sort themselves out.

Incorrect. Just the Muslims(millions) who want me & you dead, The ones who want to Kill Americans because a book of fairy tales gets burned. The ones who plan bombings and shoot are troops home & abroad.
Do I care about the people in Iraq was not the quesion, feelings have nothing to do with it. Are they better off? YES, much better.
The reason we look soft is because our leader is soft. He bows down to Muslim leaders in submission. He talks the talk but does nothing.
This weak admin. rather send letters to the UN crying about human rights in America then stop a terrorist supporting iman from buliding a victory tower at ground 0.

As long as America is in Iraq, Iran has no chance of doing anything. I'm sure you hope this happens so you can blame GW Bush. Like the President does. But yet our President is sitting by while they build nuclear missiles.

The crazy ones want us out of their countries and I would think that we would react the same to an occupying force. The bible is just another book of fairy tales and some in this country would go nuts over a burning.

It's debatable whether or not the people of Iraq are better off now and without a working government the country may soon devolve into another theocracy.

Show me a link that the leader of the planned Cultural Center supports terrorism. By all accounts he is a man of peace.

Bush identified N Korea and Iran as part of the Axis of Evil very early in his first term, how did that work out ? Oh he attacked the only one of the three that did not pose a threat and let OBL and Co go into deep hiding. Good job George.
