Default Hungarian Hooch to be legalized
One of the first election promises Hungary’s governing center-right Fidesz party wants to fulfill is to allow people to distill their own palinka, Hungary’s national alcoholic beverage.

A strong but tasty traditional Hungarian spirit with alcohol content above 37.5%, palinka is similar to grappa and distilled from almost any kind of fruit or grape pomace...Alcohol distillation has so far been heavily regulated and taxed in Hungary, allowing production only at licensed distilleries. Black-market production and sales of palinka were widespread in the Hungarian countryside, and town folks treasure the home-made drink produced there. Peach, pear, plum or grape are the most popular palinka varieties—but there even are kosher versions...The new rules allowing home-made palinka are part of the economic overhaul announced by Prime Minister Viktor Orban that includes efforts to cut red tape. Up to 86 liters a year of palinka distilled at home will be exempt from the excise tax. The drink will only allowed for consumption at home or in countryside guesthouses.

37.5% alcohol? In Slovakia they say "slabo" (weak). If it's not at least 50% alcohol it's not palanka.

that's the minimum alcohol concentration it has to have to be called palinka. i went to a palinka tasting while in budapest and didn't find the ones with more alcohol to be "better".

Come over the Matra to the Carpathians, find a small village and the hostinec and ask for palanka. It's not about taste it about the experience.

(For some people in a small number of cases blindness may occur. Nausea, vomiting are also side effects which may occur. You may experience numbness, blurred vision, and the desire to stop traffic with your new super powers which don't actually exist. Other side effects include the feeling of being very attractive to the opposite sex or same sex, the belief that you can drive like Steve McQueen. If you experience any of these side effects see your doctor or replace palanka with absinthe.)
