Default Boat made of plastic bottles sets sail across Pacific
A boat made of 12,000 plastic bottles has set sail on a voyage from San Francisco to Sydney to spread awareness about pollution in the world's oceans.
Environmentalist and banking heir David De Rothschild and a crew set out on the appropriately named Plastiki catamaran.

Their 11,000-nautical mile journey will go past the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - a sea of waste about five times the size of the UK or twice that of Texas.

God forbid they capsize in that Pacific garbage patch. Search and rescue will have a hell of a time spotting the boat from the air.

I remember reading about this a long time ago. Nice to hear it finally set sail. I love the name Plastiki - a nod to Kon Tiki I guess.

what, they couldn't cobble together more plastic bottles to really make a huge boat? That one looks so puny....one would think there was a shortage of used plastic bottles looking at the size of their vessel.

I thought it would be bigger also. Maybe there is a structural problem after you reach 12,000 plastic bottles? Maybe a boat made of more bottles isn't actually as sea worthy?

Good luck finding the garbage patch, because it doesn't exist - not in the way we think of it. It's a large collection of microscopic plastic particles, plastic breaks down to its constituent particles during the two-three years it takes to reach the center of the Pacific due to sun and salt water.

I was waiting for someone to post this fact and ruin all the cool imagery. Thanks.

I was aware of pollution back when Indians from Sicily were crying about it.

Right! Ierna Eyes Codie.

I was thinking today about an episode of Hawaii 5-O with Ricardo Montalban as a Japanese man. Much worse than John Wayne as a Mongol.

If you're going to raise awareness of Ricardo Montalban, you will need to build a boat out of rich, Corinthian leather.

When I go to Slovakia I see a car made by SEAT called a Cordoba. It's much smaller but I still think about Ricardo.

I drove a Chyrsler Cordoba once when I was 16 or 17 it looks even bigger once you are in it. I could hardly see the end of it.

Hop in my Chrysler,
it's as big as a whale
and it's about to set sail!

The SEAT was a cor-do-BAH, while the Chrysler was a cor-DOH-bah.

And I would be remiss if I didn't remind you of Khan Noonian Singh, Montalban's Sikh Star Trek villain.

Now you have to build a boat of tribble skins.

Why? Do you wish me to have a boat load of tribble?
