I recently came back from the Dom Rep and did noticed how much more socially tolerable being gay in Latin Am is now then before. The local radio DJ kept announcing "Me siento Gayyyyyyyyyyyyy!" (I fee gay!) every 5 mins in commemoration of gay month :-) They also have a pre-op talk show host and DR was host to the international Gay beauty pageant “Miss Rainbow” last year. And they have a yrly gay pride parade!

The gay tolerance may have to do more with commercialism than anything else. What better way to earn some income than to get the most affluent group of Americans to fly down and spend $$$? $$$$$$$ THE MYTH OF GAY AFFLUENCE |

Am not quite sold on that...Montreal has gay light years ahead of the DR and other LA countries for being more socially tolerable towards gays.
I can't say the same for LA. What I can see is maybe the influx of outsiders influencing the culture there. Religion has also diminished somewhat the culture and their repressive views on the gays. And let's not forget cable. The gay tolerance may have to do more with commercialism than anything else.
