Default White House fly pissed off Obama badly
Barack Obama showed great restraint as he delivered a speech yesterday – as a pesky fly buzzed around him and even landed on his face as he was speaking.

The President was shown repeatedly batting off the unwelcome attentions of the insect as he talked about healthcare in the East Room of the White House.

But Mr Obama was careful not to kill the insect– after coming under fire from an animal rights group last year for swatting a fly dead as he gave a TV interview.

Fly time: Barack Obama swats at a fly during a speech at the White House yesterday

Touch down: The errant insect managed to land on the President's face several times

Not again: The President appears impatient as the insect returns

The incident, which saw the father-of-two proudly declare: ‘I got the sucker’ prompted outrage from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).

'We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals,' Peta spokesman Bruce Friedrich said.

Death stare: Mr Obama was caught on film last year swatting a fly dead

'We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals.'

Friedrich added he had sent a ‘Katcha Humane Bug Catcher’ to Mr Obama so he could get rid of the pesky insects without killing them.

While the President didn’t have his device to hand this time, he seemed careful to show he had heeded Peta’s words and the fly escaped unscathed.

This Year, the Fly Survives
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
Mr. Obama was repeatedly pestered by the fly.Doug Mills/The New York Times Unlike last year, the fly lived on Tuesday.

He may be the commander in chief, but President Obama apparently has no power to control a lowly fly.

During an event on Tuesday in the East Room of the White House to promote his new health care law, Mr. Obama was repeatedly pestered by the fly. He swatted away at it, to no avail.

“Get out of here,’’ the president instructed the fly, provoking laughter from the audience. He added, “You’ve seen me grab one of those before.’’

Indeed, it was only the latest fly-swatting incident at the White House. During an interview a year ago with our colleague John Harwood of The Times and CNBC, Mr. Obama ordered a fly to “get out of here” and ultimately killed the insect, drawing the ire of animal rights activists.
