Default Doctor accused of sexual examination
Doctor accused of sexual examination

Richard Young is a former Cleo bachelor of the year nominee.

A DOCTOR faces suspension for a second time over allegations that he made sexually suggestive comments and carried out a pap smear test that was more "sexual than medical".

GP Richard George Young — and former Cleo bachelor of the year nominee — allegedly said "Holy mackerel, you are small" while making a pelvic examination of a woman in his consulting room in November 2004.

The patient — known as Ms SU — told a hearing of the Medical Practitioners Board that Dr Young told her to "relax, honey" as he carried out a "slow and uncomfortable" internal examination, which she claims was unnecessary.

Ms SU said Dr Young later made an inappropriate sexual reference, saying "you're really small, which is great for …", at which point she cut him off.

Dr Young, of Elwood, had his licence suspended for 15 months in 2001 after engaging in sexual relationships with two vulnerable female patients. The board found he had abused his position.

A condition of him resuming practice was that there should be a chaperone present when he examined female patients.

At yesterday's unprofessional conduct hearing, Dr Young admitted he had been flustered during Ms SU's examination because he was having difficulty inserting the speculum, so he resorted to "manual dilation". He said he had been "improvising" because he was relatively inexperienced with pap smears.

Dr Young said it was a mistake to use the phrase "holy mackerel", but denied using the word "honey". He said he had apologised at the time for the difficult examination. He denied his patient was visibly upset.

But Ms SU said the experience reduced her to tears. Under cross-examination by Dr Young's counsel, John Noonan, she said she had not objected at the time because she was still unsure if what had happened was normal.

GP Gerard Connors gave evidence that manual dilation during pap smears was an outdated practice that he had never used in 25 years of practice.

The hearing continues today.
