There have a number of landslides in Mumbai in the past At least 10 people have been killed in a landslide in a suburb of the Indian city of Mumbai, officials say. Nine people are also reported to have been injured in the incident in the Saki Naka area of Andheri. Officials say a boulder fell on shanty dwellings. It is not clear whether more people are trapped under the rubble. Rescue operations are still ongoing. There have been heavy rains in Mumbai over the past two days but the downpour eased on Friday. Three children are reported to be among the dead, officials said. The Saki Naka area has been considered unsafe since a similar landslide took place during the 2005 flooding across Mumbai. In 2000, at least 60 people died in landslides in the city. The victims in that instance were from a community of slum settlers in eastern Mumbai. More than half of Mumbai's inhabitants live in makeshift shanty towns and slums. |
