Default Canada: Gun Violence, Shootings 'Unacceptable' in BC
Gun Violence, Shootings 'Unacceptable': BC Solicitor-General John van Dongen

The Canadian Press
February 5, 2009

Solicitor-General John van Dongen says he is working on a plan to reduce the number of firearms on the streets, such as those that have led to a rash of deadly shootings in Metro Vancouver this year.

The solicitor-general acknowledged the public is concerned about the epidemic of violence and has lost confidence in the ability of B.C. courts to deal with gun violence.

Three people were gunned down in Metro Vancouver over 24 hours this week, including a man who rented the Surrey apartment building where six people -- including two bystanders -- were slaughtered in October 2007.
Raphael Baldini, who was shot in the parking lot of a busy Surrey mall, got bail on eight gun charges just two weeks after the slayings in his apartment.

"One of the common elements in these cases is the huge proliferation of firearms, all illegally being used," van Dongen said.

"At the end of the day, when you have a court system that is failing, when you have these people out who've been charged numerous times with weapons offences, you know they are up to no good. Our police officers can only do so much."

Baldini, 21, was charged Nov. 14, 2007 after being arrested in a car containing a 9-mm Glock and a Walther p22c semi-automatic. Both were loaded. He was released two days later on $15,000 bail.

Others facing several gun charges, such as Red Scorpion associates Dennis Karbovanec and Jarrod and Jamie Bacon, have all been released on bail even though rivals have been targeting them in public shootings. Karbovanec was shot twice, though not fatally, on New Year's Eve.

"You've got people out on bail that are walking the streets that are getting police protection, which is absolutely insane. It is wrong-headed. They should be in jail. They should not be allowed out on the street," Watts said. "The time has come where we should put the safety of the general public first and foremost and not the criminals."

"You look at what happened in 2007 in Surrey and you did have two innocent people who got killed."

Meanwhile, police confirmed that Baldini was the man who rented suite 1505 in the Balmoral Tower, where six people were slain.

Cpl. Dale Carr, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said police did not know if there was any link to the Surrey six case and the Baldini slaying.

They do not think Baldini's death is related to the murder two hours later of a Port Coquitlam woman who was well known to police, or the shooting Monday night in Whalley of James Ward Erickson.

The woman's name had not yet been released by police Wednesday.
Watts said all players at the federal, provincial and municipal level need to come together and work on more creative solutions to the crisis.

Man badly wounded after bullets sprayed at truck in Langley

The Canadian Press
February 6, 2009

Police found as many as 40 bullet holes in a truck after a man was shot Friday afternoon outside a suburban Vancouver supermarket.

Police have not identified the man, who was airlifted to hospital and was reported in critical condition.

The brazen shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m. in the packed parking lot of an IGA store in Langley, near the Colossus Theatre complex at 88th Avenue and 200th Street.

A witness told CBC News the pickup truck the wounded man was believed to be driving was being chased by three other vehicles.

"I was washing a front table, heard what sounded like fire crackers, looked up and there was a guy holding a handgun shooting at a truck over in front of the IGA," the witness said. CBC News decided not to name the witness for her personal safety.

"The whole parking lot was full of smoke. All of a sudden the truck started revving constantly. A young man jumped into a van and pulled out of here with two cars following behind," she said.

Another witness said he thought he heard 15 to 20 gunshots. Police later said as many as 40 shots may have been fired.

Several ambulances and police cars showed up at the scene, and a section of the parking lot was cordoned off with yellow police tape.

The RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called to assist with the investigation. Investigators were interviewing 30 to 40 witnesses Friday night.

Friday's brazen shooting is the fourth incidence of gun violence in Metro Vancouver since Monday:

  • Raphael Baldini, 21, was shot dead around 5 p.m. Tuesday while sitting in his vehicle outside Guildford Town Centre in Surrey.
  • A few hours later, Brianna Helen Kinnear, 21, was found shot dead, slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle in Coquitlam.
  • On Monday night, James Erickson, 25, was found dead with gunshot wounds in a Surrey apartment building.

Three killed in separate Vancouver-area shootings

The Canadian Press
February 4, 2009

METRO VANCOUVER — A man gunned down in the parking lot of a busy Lower Mainland shopping mall — one of three shootings in the Vancouver area on Tuesday — was the same person who rented the Surrey, B.C., penthouse where six people were brutally shot to death in October 2007.

The 21-year-old Baldini was sprayed with gunfire in the parking lot of the Guildford Mall at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday. He was transported to hospital where he was declared dead just as his family was gathering.

Another man was found shot to death in Coquitlam hours after Baldini's slaying. And just 24 hours before, James Ward Erickson was killed in another shooting Monday night in the rough Whalley neighbourhood in Surrey.

Cpl. Dale Carr, a spokesman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, was just leaving the site of the Surrey murder Tuesday when he got called out to Coquitlam, where a woman's body was found slumped over in a car on a residential street.

IHIT investigates all murders in the Metro Vancouver area except for those in the city of Vancouver.

Metro Vancouver has had a rash of shootings over the last two weeks, as well as nine homicides so far in the past two weeks. Many of the shootings have occurred in public places like the Surrey mall parking lot. Shots were also fired at a busy intersection in Abbotsford two weeks ago but the victim escaped unharmed.

Man shot to dead in a fatal hail of bullets

March 9, 2008
The Canadian Press

A police officer arrives at a south Vancouver townhouse complex where Richard Wong was shot dead Saturday night.

20-year-old Kyle Richard Wong was shot and killed as he arrived home at his townhouse complex on the 8600 block of Aqua Drive near South East Marine Drive and Victoria Drive at 8:30 p.m. PT on Saturday.

Homicide investigators from the Vancouver Police Department spent much of the night canvassing the neighbourhood and looking for evidence.
Const. Tim Fanning said one witness reported hearing as many as nine shots.

"There was a firearm that was recovered last night. We can tell you there were a number of shots fired, but obviously we can't tell you how many," said Fanning.

Jillian Quitzon was visiting a friend in the complex when she heard gunshots.

"We heard bang - bang - bang - stop - bang - bang - bang, and that's about it. And then the next thing you knew there were cops taping up, and casings were, like, actually right … on the driveway," said Quitzon.

Fanning said neighbours at the normally quiet family-oriented complex came out after Wong was shot and tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.

Prominent bystander killings in Canada

January 23, 2009
The Canadian Press

Jane Creba

Jane Creba, 15, was shot to death as two groups of people exchanged gunfire in a crowd of holiday shoppers on Yonge Street.

Two rival groups of men start shooting at each other around dinnertime on Toronto's busy Yonge Street on Boxing Day 2005. Jane Creba, a 15-year-old girl out shopping with her sister, is struck by a bullet and killed. Six other people on the street are wounded.

Two young offenders and seven adults would later face charges in the shooting. At the trial of one of the youths, identified only as J.S.R., a police officer who was at the scene would describe it as "sheer pandemonium."

"There were hundreds of people running everywhere. It was complete mayhem," Const. Brian Callanan testified.

Chris Mohan and Edward J. Schellenberg

Six men are found dead in a multiple shooting on the 15th floor of an apartment building in Surrey, B.C.

RCMP would later describe two of the men — Chris Mohan, 22, of Surrey and Edward J. Schellenberg, 55, of Abbotsford — as innocent bystanders who were caught "in the wrong place at the wrong time." Schellenberg was a gas fireplace repairman who was working in the building that day. Police did not say why Mohan was at the apartment.

John O'Keefe

Two men are kicked out of the Brass Rail strip club on Yonge Street in Toronto about 1:30 a.m. The men later return to the front of the club and fire shots at a crowd outside. John O'Keefe, who was heading home from the Duke of Gloucester Pub, also on Yonge Street, is hit and killed.

Toronto police Det. Sgt. Dan Nielsen says the two men kicked out of the strip club tried to shoot a bouncer and O'Keefe just got in the way.

Hou Chang Mao

Hou Chang Mao, 47, is killed by a stray bullet as he is stacking fruit at a grocery store on Gerrard Street East in Toronto's Chinatown East during the evening rush hour.

Police would later say they are frustrated by a language barrier and a lack of co-operation from members of the Chinese community.

Police release images from security video cameras of a silver Nissan Maxima and of two black men whom they describe as persons of interest.

Bailey Zaveda

Two men start fighting in a crowd of a dozen people outside the Duke of York tavern on Toronto's Queen Street East. One of the men starts shooting at the other, and hits him and four other people. One of them, Bailey Zaveda, 23, is killed.

Toronto police later issue a Canada-wide arrest warrant for Kyle Weese, 24, of no fixed address, for second-degree murder in connection with the shooting. Toronto police Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux describes Weese as a "very violent person" with a "very extensive criminal record."

Shooting in a busy shopping mall, multiple shooters involved, machine guns used. It is fortunate that no bystanders were hit.

Man sprayed with automatic weapon fire at Langley mall

The Canadian Press
February 8, 2009

METRO VANCOUVER - A man was critically wounded in a crowded Langley mall parking lot when "multiple shooters" opened fire Friday afternoon.

Sgt. Peter Thiessen said investigators are dealing with a "significant incident."

"This shooting involves multiple shooters - we are not in a position to say how many right now - and we have multiple suspects," Thiessen said. "The suspects fled the scene on foot. They did occupy a suspect vehicle that was occupied by other suspects."

At least one of the many rounds fired in front of a busy IGA hit the windshield of a shopper's car, Thiessen said.

The mall shooting is the fourth in a week, almost identical to the murder Tuesday of Raphael Baldini outside Surrey's Guildford Mall.

The frightening public violence caps a week where there have been twelve murders in Metro Vancouver.

But RCMP Asst. Commissioner Peter German said the public should not be alarmed, though cautious.

"I am very concerned obviously by what has happened. It was a serious shooting. We have had a number of them in the last couple of days," German said. "I am also concerned where this took place. It took place in public. It took place in a shopping mall....there is obviously a danger to the public."

But he said police are pulling out all the stops to catch those responsible, working with all the regional specialized units.

People who heard the shooting said they thought automatic weapons were used.

RCMP Const. Holly Marks said the shooting was shocking, given how busy the area is with a mall containing restaurants, the IGA and other businesses.

Nicole Watt was washing tables at Taco del Mar when she heard what she thought were firecrackers. Then, "I saw a guy running from a van. He ran across with a gun and he just started shooting," said Watt, who has lived all her life in Langley.

A man in a dark truck was shot with at least two guns, Watt said.

The shooter she saw carried a handgun, while a second man carrying a machine gun was obscured by a pillar. She said she didn't get a good look at either man.

She raced to call 911 before it was over. A doctor from a neighbouring clinic ran to aid the victim, a tall, muscular man covered with tattoos.

"They [the shooters] tore out of the parking lot, said Watt. "It is very disturbing. It was right there," she said, pointing outside.

"People saw both guns dropped in the parking lot."

Watt said she understood the victim was chased into the crowded parking lot by assailants. Some accounts said he was cornered by as many as three vehicles.

"They stopped, they parked, they ran across the parking lot and they shot him. The parking lot was full. It was 10 after four. People were running out of all the businesses to see what happened."

The young mother was shocked and shaken.

"It's a very nice family-oriented area of town. It is not where you would connect with something like this."

Police brought in a transit bus to take witnesses away to be interviewed as investigators scoured the wet parking lot for shell casings and bullets.

Many shoppers and mall workers were unable to get their cars out from behind the yellow police tape.

NDP MLA Mike Farnworth said the violence was unprecedented.

"This is completely out of control," Farnworth, his party's critic for the solicitor-general's ministry, which is in charge of policing, said after about the latest shooting.

A grey pickup truck with a broken driver's-side window sat double-parked in front of the supermarket, cordoned off by police.

Natalie Jones, who works at Extreme Pita, said there was a heavy police presence in the mall by the time she started her late-afternoon shift.

"The place was surrounded. There's helicopters flying above," said Jones. "Apparently the [victim] was in pretty serious condition, but he was gone by the time I got here.

"People here are pretty freaked out."

On Monday, James Erickson was gunned down in his apartment building on 105A in Langley.

Suspect nabbed after shooting early Saturday in Coquitlam

The Canadian Press
February 8, 2009

A 19-year-old Port Moody, B.C. resident is in custody after a man was shot and wounded in an apparent robbery attempt early Saturday.

Coquitlam RCMP say they responded to a call of shots fired and quickly arrested a man not far from the shooting scene.

Police say it appears the two men met earlier and the shooting was a result of an attempted robbery.

A 22-year-old Port Moody, B.C., resident was treated and released for a gunshot wound to his leg.

RCMP say the suspect faces charges of aggravated assault, robbery and weapon-related offences.

He'll appear in Port Coquitlam Provincial court on Monday.

Metro Vancouver's sixth shooting in a week

February 9, 2009
The Canadian Press

Another shooting has hit Metro Vancouver.

A man was found shot in a Vancouver west side grocery store parking lot around 11 p.m. Sunday night.

Vancouver Police were called to the IGA, located in the 2000-block of West 10th Avenue, after they received multiple calls reporting shots fired.

Insp. Mike Cumberworth, of the Vancouver Police Department, said the victim has been taken to Vancouver General Hospital with multiple gun shot wounds.

A suspect was seen fleeing the scene on foot, but no arrests have been made.

Police cordoned off the area and officers with police dogs were searching for any signs of the suspect.

VPD forensic investigators were on scene helping with the investigation.

This is the sixth shooting in the Metro Vancouver area in less than a week.

Are you in living in Vancouver?
There is a very cheapskate TVB presenter who lived there and annoyed me with her demand for free things (even after the seller said it cost $20)

Actually, she is kind of bubbly, cheerful and talkative. Will save money type.
But typical HK-born Canadian, that is problematic.

Shots fired on North Road

The Canadian Press
February 12, 2009

A shooting at 3 p.m. Thursday in on the Burnaby-Coquitlam border has the neighbourhood rattled.

Residents around the home in the 2400-block of North Road just south of Broadway reported hearing six shots, a pause, and then "bang, bang, bang" before two cars sped off.

"It's crazy. It's every day now," said a young man who lives close by and wouldn't give his name.

He was outside his home, talking to a neighbour when the shots were fired.

"We looked at each other and said, 'That's gunfire, not firecrackers.' And we called the cops."

He said he's worried for his safety now.

"When it's two blocks from your house, it's not fun."

There didn't appear to be any bullet holes in the front of the house but on the side of the home, about 10 orange cones in a tight cluster indicated where the shots might have been fired.

People living in a housing complex across the street said they heard the shots and are now worried about the security of their previously quiet neighbourhood north of Lougheed Mall.

Few knew anything about the people living in the house except that it's a group of young people that often has parties.

Well, this is getting really bad. I cannot imagine how people can just resort to messing around with guns.

Shooting at Centaurus Circle, Burnaby

The Canadian Press
February 12, 2009

Burnaby RCMP are seeking help to find out why shots were fired Thursday evening in the 8700 block of Centaurus Circle.

Just after 9 p.m., police received several reports of the shots, but once they got there all they found were a number of spent shell casings.

Interviews of neighbours failed to find someone who had actually seen the shots being fired.

Anyone having any information about this incident is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP or Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 1-800-222-4477.

Guns are everywhere and sentences for firearms offences are light. If you get arrested today, you can get bail and go home by the next day, if not the same evening.
