THE HAGUE : A passenger plane operated by Turkish Airlines crashed on Wednesday while landing at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, an airport spokesman told AFP.
"It's a Turkish Airlines plane which crashed as it was approaching the runway," said Melanie Smieder, of the airport's press service. "All air traffic is blocked," she added. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737, she said. "The fire services and ambulances are on site," airport spokesman Mirjam Snoerwang told Dutch television. Turkey's Transport Minister Binali Yildirim said that none of the 135 passengers or eight crew aboard the crashed Turkish Airlines plane had lost their lives. "The good news is that there was no loss of life in the accident" at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, Yildirm said in televised remarks. He said that there were injured passengers, but gave no figures. Earlier, Turkey's CNN-Turk news channel reported that one person had been killed and 20 others injured in the crash. Yildirim said that about 80 people had been evacuated from the plane. The Boeing 737 crashed while landing and broke into two or three pieces on impact, according to media reports from the airport. - AFP/ms |
