Default Thaddeus Mccotter to announce on the 4th
A new GOP candidate for president. One thing I like is he's taking on the big banks, and pushing for easier credit for businessmen and working people. He said on Fox that his favorite band is the Beatles.

Easier credit? that's what got us into the mess in the first place.

I don't know why McCotter is running. His chance of actually gaining the nomination is less than zero. Is he doing a Gephardt aka 1988, ie hoping that a reasonable run will set him up in the House leadership; or is he hoping to increase his name recognition and fundraising, and then switch to challenge Stabenow?

Well, a Presidential run increases name recognition no matter what, and it increases prestige if he does even a little better than expected. But I think his motivation for running is that there aren't any other candidates quite like him. And he will gain some following if he can get his message out. There is definitely a niche in the Republican electorate for his brand of populism.

If I had to predict, I'd say he actually wins a few delegates, becomes more well known, and yes, runs for Senate. But not against Stabenow. I suspect Levin won't run for reelection and McCotter will go for that vacant seat in 2014.

His support of working people would be his downfall.

The Republican Party in general supports working people. The Democrats pretend to, but they really support non-working people, not working people. Well, public employees are an exception to that rule.

I`ll have to disagree. I was a steelworker for 35 years and enjoyed the support of the democrats.

Union workers have often been more supportive of Democrats, but working people overall tend to go pretty overwhelmingly for Republicans. And private sector union workers have been the classic Reagan Democrats at times. They are very winnable for Republicans. Anyone who pays taxes is a potential win for the Republicans.

Working people go overwhelmingly for repubs? I doubt it but yes,the repubs have learned very well how to exploit the gun issue and telling people they`re overtaxed is always a winning strategy. No need to tell them that they pay less taxes than any other developed country.

Not until they get out of the pocket of the extreme religious right. There are many people who agree with some republican ideologies about economics, but are wholly unwilling to sacrifice their moral principles to vote for republican social repression. I think they'd be surprised at how many votes they could gain by going back to the true conservative value of less government interference in people's private lives.

America didn't fill up with people from other countries so that we could mimic them. taxes aren't a relative thing. You either have enough money, or you don't, and when taxes take up a pretty sizeable chunk of your income, it's no consolation that the French have it worse.

Actually, a lot of people came here because they wanted a government that was more responsive to the needs of the people.

To my way of thinking, the new credit regulations affecting small local banks ARE a huge part of today's economic problems. These were an over-reaction to the credit bubble (sponsored by big bank deregulation) that caused the crash. The borrowers were blamed and are now being punished. Try to get a mortgage or personal or business loan- it shouldn't be this damn hard.

They came here for opportunity, not a handout.
