Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan - CNN.com

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive body of water filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward highways.

The epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from the capital, Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. But residents there felt the tremors. 8.9 is a very powerful earthquake.

8.9 is a very powerful earthquake.

It is the hugest ever recorded in japanese history and reports about victims ( it is for example unclear how many ships are lost at sea and the internet and telephone have broken down in parts of the country) and entire regions beeing destroyed keep coming. And a nuclear plant seems to be burning, although the governement claims the situation is under control. And apparently Tsunami waves are racing across the Pacific Ocean right now. The question is when and where they will hit land. Indonesia, the Philippines and Russia have begun mass evacuations in coastal regions........

Initial reports of the nuclear plant fire turned out to be in error. There is an oil refinery fire, and 4 nuclear plants were safely shut down, but there are no longer reports of a nuclear plant damaged or on fire.

After saying they wouldn't evacuate people, the Japanese gov't for the first time in it's history has declared a state of emergency at a power plant and has evacuated over 2,800 people who live nearby.

The Tsunami has just hit Hawaii, with waves reaching about 8 feet high.

The west coat is set to see it's first waves roll in at between 11 and 11:30 am EST.

Another reminder we are like fleas on a dog's back, and are at the mercy of Nature. My heart goes out to the Japanese people. I would imagine the damage and loss of life to be great and unseen since WW2.

Cresent City, CA is expecting 6-7 ft waves. Hawaii doesn't seem to have any damage, but most of our coast infrastructure is on the south or east of the islands.

They are having trouble keeping the coolant pumps going on their reactors, the permanent backup generators are just as susceptible to quake damage, they are moving in mobile ones.

They are going to be picking people out of the mud for months. The 7th Fleet is being sent for medivac and logistics support.

Here we still have these reports. According to german TV Japan has declared a state of "nuclear emergency" and ordered evacuations around at least one nuclear plant.
And the official death toll now has crossed 1000 and is still expected to rise dramatically.
