Default Japan just got nailed with a huge Tsunami
Massive 8.9-magnitude quake hits Japan - CNN.com

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive body of water filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward highways.

The epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from the capital, Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. But residents there felt the tremors. 8.9 is a very powerful earthquake.

Ja, watching the coverage on this now. I am seeing that Tsunami warnings are up on all western coastal states? 3-ft surge warnings.

8.9 is a very powerful earthquake.
It is the hugest ever recorded in japanese history and reports about victims ( it is for example unclear how many ships are lost at sea and the internet and telephone have broken down in parts of the country) and entire regions beeing destroyed keep coming. And a nuclear plant seems to be burning, although the governement claims the situation is under control. And apparently Tsunami waves are racing across the Pacific Ocean right now. The question is when and where they will hit land. Indonesia, the Philippines and Russia have begun mass evacuations in coastal regions........

Initial reports of the nuclear plant fire turned out to be in error. There is an oil refinery fire, and 4 nuclear plants were safely shut down, but there are no longer reports of a nuclear plant damaged or on fire.

Humanities? Really?

Anyway, this is Japan's most severe earthquake since they started recording them some 140 years ago.

Here are some neat pics from the NY Times. Aftermath of the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan - Photographs - NYTimes.com

After saying they wouldn't evacuate people, the Japanese gov't for the first time in it's history has declared a state of emergency at a power plant and has evacuated over 2,800 people who live nearby.

The Tsunami has just hit Hawaii, with waves reaching about 8 feet high.

The west coat is set to see it's first waves roll in at between 11 and 11:30 am EST.

Watching the CNN coverage live - the water is receding from the shoreline - which is usually the prelude to a large tsunami impact.

Japanese police (according to CNN) are reporting hundreds of deaths, and that figure is expected to rise dramatically.

Another reminder we are like fleas on a dog's back, and are at the mercy of Nature. My heart goes out to the Japanese people. I would imagine the damage and loss of life to be great and unseen since WW2.

Cresent City, CA is expecting 6-7 ft waves. Hawaii doesn't seem to have any damage, but most of our coast infrastructure is on the south or east of the islands.

They are having trouble keeping the coolant pumps going on their reactors, the permanent backup generators are just as susceptible to quake damage, they are moving in mobile ones.

They are going to be picking people out of the mud for months. The 7th Fleet is being sent for medivac and logistics support.

Thoughts and Prayers to the people of Japan.

At 8.9, it will likely be the 5th biggest earthquake ever recorded.

When the foreign government of a close ally asks for help, it makes sense to intervene. It certainly makes more sense than most invasions.

8.9 is a very powerful earthquake.
It was the fifth most powerful, globally, since 1900.

Japan owns a bunch of our debt too.

Perhaps we can pay them off with services rendered.

Here we still have these reports. According to german TV Japan has declared a state of "nuclear emergency" and ordered evacuations around at least one nuclear plant.
And the official death toll now has crossed 1000 and is still expected to rise dramatically.

Fuck money.

17.06: The Tokyo Electric Power Company has said the pressure inside the No. 1 reactor at its Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant has been rising, with the risk of a radiation leak, according to the Jiji Press news agency. Tepco planned to take measures to release the pressure, the report added. The reactor's cooling system began to malfunction after the earthquake. People living close to the plant were later evacuated as a precaution.

1708: Nuclear physicist Dr Walt Patterson tells the BBC it sounds like there is a "serious problem" at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. "It's the sort of thing that nuclear engineers have nightmares about," he says. "If it is not resolved in the next few hours it will get serious. If the core is uncovered, then those rods at the top may get hot enough to melt themselves."
Not. Good.

That sort of expense is worth it.
