Default John Ensign Resigning Effective May 3rd
Sen. John Ensign announced Thursday he is resigning from his seat in Congress, where he served for 11 years, and he will send a letter to Vice President Joe Biden on Friday stating that his resignation from office will be effective on May 3, 2011.

Ensign, R-Ariz., who is still a subject of a Senate Ethics Committee investigation, said in a statement that he has done nothing wrong and will not subject his family to more public scrutiny.

Sen. John Ensign Announces Resignation From Senate - ABC News Word on the street is that the governor will appoint Dean Heller to fill the remainder of Ensign's term which will trigger a special election in Heller's House district which nut job Sharron Angle plans on running for.

I just saw this. I agree with you that Heller will be appointed. It was shaping up to be a tought fight for him ... and still will be, but this time he'll have the advantage of incumbency. Ensign resigned though before the Ethics Committee could release their findings - which are supposed to be highly damning. I guess he's jumping before he's pushed to try to salvage some sort of reputation.

Wow, another one goes down from some sort of ethics issue. Another "God fearing" politician with his hand caught in the wrong cookie jar? When will this shit end!?

Is there someone standing in for Joe Biden to read this letter? Last time I saw him he was sleeping?

If Sharron Angle runs, she'll probably lose.

With a little luck, maybe Ensign can serve another term, at Danbury.

This definitely gives Heller an advantage, assuming he's appointed. As for Angle, she can win a House district, especially one favorable to her. She almost beat the Senate Majority Leader in a swing state, she can certainly win a red district. And lord knows she can raise money.

She's already announced she's running for Heller's House seat, as he'd already announced he's running to replace Ensign. It's looking increasingly likely that he'll be appointed to the interim seat until the special election is held later this year.

NV-2 is heavily Republican. If Angle wins the primary, she probably wins the seat. And while I prefer my Senators to be thoughtful and serious, I don't mind a few gadflies in the House. Democrats love their Dennis Kuciniches and Jim McDermotts, Republicans are allowed to have their Bachmanns, Angles, and Pauls in the House.

False equivalency!

Liberals love their Kuciniches and Graysons and McDermotts, but for every one of those there are at least 5 Republicans who are completely batshit crazy people, like that loser who stuck it to the 9/11 first responders as they are about to receive mail from the gov't saying their names must be checked on the terror watch list in order for them to qualify for their health benefits.

Or that other loser who came out yesterday playing his guitar and saying about embattled PM Berlusconi of Italy, "he found his satisfaction", and then going on to defend the guy.

He found his satisfaction as a 74 yr-old paying an under-age escort?

I'm sorry, but this shit comes out of the right by a ratio that far exceeds the silly crap that goes on the left.

I don't see it as false equivalency, if anything I'm being generous to your nutters. The worst that can be said about our fringe figures is that they favor turning back the clock to Calvin Coolidge. You've got folks with theories that wouldn't even make a good science fiction story.

Ensign is a Senator, not a House member. Angle would be running for the whole state.

Ensign R-AZ?
Yeah, ABC dropped the ball on that one.

Ensign, "said in a statement that he has done nothing wrong and will not subject his family to more public scrutiny."

Seems to me a US Senator ought to be held to a higher standard than a baseball player. Taxpayer dollars spent to investigate drug use by ball players might be better put towards investigating Ensign as well as other members of Congress who believe they are above the law (sadly, it seems they are correct).

Not that it's impossible for Angle to win a Senate seat. She came pretty close against a powerful incumbent. Give her a few years in the House of not embarrassing herself and she could be a contender when Reid retires.

Wanna know why his last day is Tuesday, May 3rd of all days?

Because on Wednesday he would have had to answer questions to the Ethics Committee about the $96,000 cheque from him to his friends-with-benefits-staffer and her husband.

He has something called shame. Barney Frank, Gerry Studds, Bill Clinton, Charlie Rangel, Maxine Waters, William Jefferson, Jack Murtha, the ABSCAM 4 and the Keating 3(Yes, there were 5, but only 3 did anything wrong), had no shame. They fought and fought to keep their jobs no matter how corrupt and sleazy they were proven to be. Democrats never resign when faced with scandal. Republicans usually do. Often before the scandal even becomes widely known.
