LAHORE/ISLAMABAD - Heavy rains in many parts of the country have caused havoc resulting in deaths of over a dozen people in different accidents, while a warning for high-floods has been issued for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rivers.Heavy downpours paralysed life in Nowshera and Sialkot after low-laying areas were submerged by water. The flooding of Nullah Dek submerged many villages in Sialkot and it also resulted in the closure of Sialkot-Narowal Road for traffic. The water level at Head Marala was reported to be dangerously high.Three children died as a wall collapsed after heavy rains in Kotli Satyan area of Rawalpindi. Three of a family were killed at Satal area of Bahrain, in Bagh district, when their wagon fell into a ravine due to a landslide.Four people, including two women, were reportedly killed in rain and flood related incidents in Nowshera district. Roads and streets in many areas of Nowshera turned into into ponds and people were facing immense difficulties as water entered their homes due the rain that stared at 5am Wednesday morning. Power supply was severed in many areas after the snapping of high tension wires.The most affected areas included Azakhel Bala, Azakhel Payan, Pir Piyai and Aman Garh. According to director relief operations of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Zulfiqar Ali, heavy showers in Nowshera and adjoining areas flooded the streams and nullahs of the district. He confirmed that one person died and another two went missing in the floods, besides heavy damages to houses, cultivated lands and landsliding incidents.Sources said that the deceased and missing persons were Afghan refugees residing in nearby streams in temporary houses. Zulfiqar Ali said that PDMA teams were busy in rescue operation and to ascertain property and human losses caused by flood. According to the local administration, people have encroached on drains leading to water entering their homes.Flash floods also swept away dozens of animals in Pabbi. At least 11 people have been reportedly injured. The water entered the houses after drains overflowed as a result several walls and houses built of mud were razed to ground.Meanwhile, a warning for high-level flooding in the next 48 hours has been issued for rivers including Kabul, Kurram, Gambeela and Swat in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), Lahore issued the warning that more torrential rains are expected in Kohat, Bannu, Peshawar, Mardan and Hazara Division during the next two days, adding that heavy showers may spawn flooding in these rivers.Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) also issue flood warnings in Kohat and Mardan districts. The population situation nearby streams and rain water nullahs has been directed to move to safe places and most of the people have shifted to safer places after the warning.In Punjab, warning of high flood in rivers Ravi and Chenab was issued along with a forecast of more rains in Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Lahore, Faisalabad and Sahiwal.The MET office said that a low-level flood was present near Shahdra in Ravi which is expected to be a high-level flood during the next 24 hours.In another unfortunate incident, a boat carrying at least 17 people capsized in the Chenab River at Head Panjnad near Muzzafargarh on Tuesday. Five people had been rescued. According to local administration, a large number of people had gathered at Head Panjnad for picnic on Eid’s second day. An unconfirmed report said six girls of a family drowned while swimming in a pond in Dera Ghazi Khan. Bodies of some of them had reportedly been recovered.
