The dual nationality bill faced opposition from all quarters when it was presented in the Senate. The PML-N, coalition partners and some members of the PPP expressed their reservations over the bill. The bill was presented in the Senate by Law Minister Farooq H Naek. The PML-N and ANP which is a coalition partner of the government staged a walkout in protest to the bill. Earlier during the session ANP Senator Haji Adeel said that Pakistan’s agreements with 16 countries regarding dual nationality should be presented. Adeel also asked if someone who also had Pakistani nationality could become the US president or a parliamentarian in another country. Senators Aitzaz Ahsan and Raza Rabbani from the PPP also expressed their reservations over the bill. Ahsan said that when someone takes oath as an American citizen, they have to renounce other nationalities. “It is written in the US citizenship oath that a person can also take up arms in defence of the country.” Senator Rabbani asked for a review of the dual nationality agreement with the US. Reservations were also expressed by the MQM. Senator Tahir Mashadi who said he would inform the standing committee about his reservations. ANP’s Haji Adeel said he would not accept Chairman’s ruling of referring the bill to the Standing Committee on Law and Justice without permission of the House. That led to exchange of some words between the two. The Opposition and ANP said that the government wanted to bulldoze the bill just for the sake of some corrupt people. Raja Zafarul Haq and othr opposition members said that the PPP was giving bogus arguments against the constitution framed by its leader Late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He questioned if a foreign government hires some dual nationality people holding higher positions, how this would be forestalled.He referred to Moeen Qureshi and Shaukat Aziz, holders of dual nationality, who were made Prime Ministers and then left with their brief cases. The PML-N’s Zafar Ali Shah stressed referring the bill to Standing Committee without a debate, stands contrary to the Constitution. Later on, PML-N and ANP walked out of the House. Later on, PML-N and ANP walked out of the House. Other opposition members said if Z.A.Bhutto had been alive, he would not have allowed this amendment. Senate Chairman Bukhari, reacting to the PML-N’s opposition to the proposed bill, said they can put their viewpoints at table in Standing Committee. Naek also reinforced that the members can submit amendments in the Bill in Standing Committee; their suggestions will be mostly willingly acknowledged.
