Islamabad - Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Nisar Ali Khan has said the opposition is not creating hurdles in the appointment of new chief election commissioner.
In a statement issued on Monday, Nisar said the deadlock would only emerge if the government tries to put a person of its choice on the coveted post. He said the view of the PML-N on this issue was quite clear, adding that the party would propose a panel of people approved by all opposition parties in and outside the assembly. “Though it is not a constitutional requirement but to promote healthy democratic traditions, the PML-N will respect the viewpoint of other parties which have no representation in the assemblies,” he said. Nisar said the PML-N had given a list to the parliamentary committee to consult Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, PPP-Sherpao Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, National Party of Balochistan and Sindh Nationalist Parties. He said appointment of a CEC was possible if the objective was to organise free, fair and transparent elections. However, he was of the opinion that the government was not sincere. Nisar said the PML-N would adopt a similar course of action for the appointment of caretaker government. It would propose name of people who hold spot free past and enjoy good reputation. |
