Peshawar - Pleading justice for his brother Dr Shakil Afridi, sentenced to 33 years in prison for helping the US get to Osama Bin Laden, Jamil Afridi expressed concern over the indifferent attitude of government functionaries.
“From the last several days, my lawyers and I are requesting the political administration of Khyber Agency and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prison Department officials for giving them a copy of the verdict and signing of authority in favour of the attorney, but they have remained mum,” he said during a press conference in Peshawar on Monday. Flanked by office-bearers and members of FATA Lawyers’ Forum and the Aman Tehreek, Jamil said, “My brother did nothing against the interests of Pakistan and its people”. “I ask for justice and my brother must be listened to,” he said, adding that since last Friday, “we are visiting offices of political administration and Peshawar Central Jail, but unfortunately, the functionaries are reluctant to give us a copy of the verdict or to let us Shakil”. “My brother, I and our family members are proud to be Pakistanis and determined to serve its interests,” he said to a question. He said Shakil and other family members were serving the country in various capacities. “There is no protection for us and other relatives,” he said. However, he avoided to identify from where the threats were directed, saying “anything can happen in this country anytime”. Quoting media reports regarding threats to life of Dr Shakil, Jamil said the “responsibility rests with the government to provide him due security”. He avoided answering a question about his expectations from the international community in the case. “It is our internal matter,” Jamil said, adding that “we have nothing to do with international politics. We are interested in justice only”. “I appeal to the chief justice of Pakistan to provide us security and help us exercise our right of appeal,” Jamil said. Afridi likely to be shifted to Attock Fort ISLAMABAD: Dr Shakeel Afridi, who was sentenced to prison for 33 years amid intelligence reports accusing him of treason against Pakistan, is likely to be shifted from Peshawar Central Jail to Attock Fort. Reliable sources said intelligence agencies had warned the government that extremist organisations were about to attack Dr Afridi and his imprisonment in Peshawar jail was dangerous with regard to security concerns. So the agencies asked for him to be shifted to a safe and secure location, the sources added. Dr Afridi had been working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and had informed CIA about the presence of al Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad. Owing to this information, the US attacked the compound of Bin Laden in Abbottabad and killed him on May 2, 2011. Online |
