Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza is likely to chair the session summoned by President Asif Ali Zardari in exercise of powers conferred upon him under Clause (1) of Article 54 of the Constitution.
During the sitting expected to continue for three days, the Parliament will discuss about new terms of engagement with the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato). It is for the first time since suspension of the Nato supplies after killing of around two-dozen Pakistani military personnel at Salala check post in Mohmand Agency near Pak-Afghan border that the joint sitting of the Parliament is going to discuss the future dynamism of relations. Pakistan had suspended the Nato supplies soon after the attack of the check post and the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) was assigned the task to deliberate on the issue and recommend to the Parliament future course of action. The committee completed its report in the second half of January with reported more than 30 recommendations for new terms of engagement with the Nato and the US. Some important proposals regarding Pakistan's energy needs, drone attacks, Pakistan's access to the European Union and the US markets have been included in the recommendations. The committee has laid emphasis on ensuring respect for Pakistan's sovereignty and integrity and have future relations with the Nato and the US on the basis of mutual respect and on parity. The joint sitting will discuss the recommendations in detail and chalk out a future strategy and terms of engagement. |
