As promised, all Senate Democrats aligned Friday night to kill the just-passed House Republican bill to raise the debt limit.

The roll call fell closely along party lines, 59-41, with all Democrats voting to table Speaker John Boehner's controversial bill, joined by several Republicans who also oppose that plan.

Now we enter a period of calm. Before midnight, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hopes to introduce his own debt limit bill -- amended to include more spending cuts, and a few as-yet undisclosed carrots, to entice enough Republicans to overcome a filibuster and pass the legislation.

Once the tweaks are completed, and the bill is introduced, Reid will set the wheels in motion to pass it. If all goes as currently planned, he'll file cloture on the plan tonight. Because it will be attached to a privileged vehicle -- the stripped bare shell of Boehner's plan -- it will tee-up a 1 a.m. Sunday vote to end an expected filibuster. If there are 60 votes -- and that's the crucial if -- that will lock in a vote on final passage after 7 a.m. on Monday. Then it's back to the House, with fingers crossed.

Given that our economic growth for the first two quarters of this years were 0.4% and 1.3%, do we really need deep spending cuts? With consumer spending way down and high unemployment and then take a big chunk out of government spending, the economy grinds to a halt.

Pay the soldiers, veterans and old people and leave the rest of us alone. They've got enough tax "revenue" to cover that. Stop borrowing us into debt oblivion. Stop the runaway government money train.

Leave the rest of who alone? Do you work in Washington DC? Are you disabled? Do have some military contracts? Own a hospital or are you a doctor that gets Medicare payments? Do work for NOAA, the FEC, Homeland Security, FEMA, the border patrol, or any of the other government agencies? Are you unemployed? Do you get food stamps? Do you work at any ports or the airports (oh, I forgot. They're already on furlough).

He means the rest of the folks like those in rural Kansas living on Medicare and Social Security and unemployment and trying to keep health care like their own from being made available to all Americans, dragging abortion providers through tax-paid court systems when not assassinating them, dragging gays through tax-paid court systems to keep them from being married or serving in the military, collecting federal farm subsidies and organizing their tax-sheltered "churches" as political advocacy groups.
