The first time, the millionaire Romney declared himself 'also unemployed' to a crowd of jobless people. This time the reminder that Romney's richer than you was more subtle. Just slightly. The San Diego Union-Tribune broke the story of Romney's California plans this weekend: Romney has filed an application with the city to bulldoze his 3,009-square-foot, single-story home at 311 Dunemere Dr. and replace it with a two-story, 11,062-square-foot structure. No date has been set to consider the proposed coastal development and site development permits, which must be approved by the city. Three years ago, Romney bought the "oceanfront manse in La Jolla" for $12 million. His campaign says the house on the property is too small for Romney's large extended family, and so he's dipping into some of that unfathomable personal fortune to expand it. Excuse me - |

Not a thing, but coming from a candidate that tries to be an everyday guy, Mr I am unemployed too, it reeks of hypocrisy.
It's the California way, Bigger House, Shiner car, fancier clothes, how I grew up there I will never know. I lived in West LA, athletes and movie stars were common, knew some even and they were mostly shallow self absorbed people, just not my cup of tea. part of the reason I moved form California. A 2 story home may block the view of his new neighbors but I am sure he spoke to them and wouldn't do anything to upset anyone. |

If he's not working, then techinically he's unemployed. He's not lying about that. I took that as kind of tongue in cheek, but that's just me.
If he's like most Mormons I know, he DOES have a huge extended family. I'm sure the space is needed for children and grandchildren, and (maybe) great-grandchildren. I remember going to my friend Hilary's grandma's house for Christmas and there were at least 40 people wandering aro und her grandma's house -- adults, kids, everyone. And that was just HER family...Grandma's kids, their spouses and kids, the grandkids' spouses and kids. It was wall to wall people, and her grandma had a big house. I'm not sure I'd call it hypocrisy. If he's true to what the Prophets tell us to do, he's not planning on keeping a mortgage on whatever changes he makes. |

When he applies for unemployment insurance then he's unemployed, it was a callous comment, just like corporations are people my friend.
I guess we can agree to disagree on the definition of unemployed, if your $$ in the bank makes more than the average US citizen, I don't consider that unemployed. I have unemployed friends, one couple lost their house and a couple others are in jeopardy of losing theirs too, but to keep the house they are using retirement savings & 401K money, that is unemployed to me, not some Multimillionaire who just happens to not be working because he is campaigning. Mitt not working is a good thing, Bain likes to buy business' shut them down and send the jobs over sea's. great gig if you can get it I guess. |

I was unemployed for 2 1/2 years, taking whatever temporary jobs I could take to keep a roof over me and my son's heads. My brother is unemployed and has exhausted his unemployment and is currently doing handyman work to keep his mortgage current. Even now, with a good job, I've had to ask my bishop at church for quite a bit of help. I guess I don't understand why you're so upset about someone with money spending said money to build a dream house. But...we can agree to disagree.

Building the house is just representative of his mind set, he is not an everyman, he has no clue what common people go through, why you are not outraged at the "I am unemployed too" comment after what you have gone through is surprising, I'm mad at watching my friends and family struggle. Mitt Romney was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he has never had a need or want that was not satisfied, he does not know your pain, that is why I am angry, he lies. |

Like I said, I took it as a tongue in cheek comment. I didn't take it seriously, because shoot, any of our politicians could never work another day in their lives and live far more comfortably than I live when I'm working. I also didn't get upset with uber-rich Christian Bale saying his long hair was "unemployment" when he was over a year between movies...because if you're not working, you ARE techinically unemployed, even if you have lots of money. I envy those who can choose not to work, or be out of a job, and not be struggling. I don't begrudge them that. I envy it, but I don't begrudge them.
NONE of the politicians "know my pain". None of them are single mothers, struggling to keep a roof over their rebellious son's head, supporting a drug addicted sister, with a mother battling cancer and a father who feels worthless because at 72 and after a stroke, he can't do everything he did 10 years ago. I let go of that bitterness eons ago, because it doesn't get me anywhere. I can only worry about ME, and what I do with my life. Mitt Romney is Mormon. That most likely means he is service oriented, so there is a very good chance he regularly does service-related projects. More than likely, he donates heavily to more than just his 10% tithing to the Church (Fast Sunday offerings to help those who are struggling with food and bills, etc.). Also, unless you've walked in his shoes, you don't know what sorts of struggles HE may have in his life. Having money doesn't make life all sunshine and roses. I know this for a fact. If his business has been to shut down American businesses and send the work overseas, that is something he'll have to deal with both within himself and with his Heavenly Father for making his brothers and sisters suffer. And, it will show in the voting booths. |

Since the nation's unemployment figures include only those who are actively seeking a job, and Romney is not working by choice (because he doesn't need to work), for Romney to call himself "unemployed" is more than a bit disingenuous. He's most definitely NOT part of America's unemployed.
And even if the comment was made "tongue-in-cheek" I hardly think that the people hearing him who are truly unemployed and desperately in need of a job would have found it amusing. That he would have made the comment shows him to be insensitive and completely out of touch with the reality of the general population's concerns. |
