There is a cult-like sensibility to some of the extremists populating the Tea Party.
Recall that just a few months back, a hall full of the Tea Party corporate backers from Americans For Prosperity broke into raucous cheers when they learned that America had lost its bid for the 2016 Olympics. Over the weekend at a Tea Party rally in Wisconsin, a speaker---ostensibly trying to evoke outrage at the Tea Party being painted as damaging worldwide trust in America's economy--was greeted with cheers and applause when she told the gathering that they'd begun calling the recent S&P downgrade the "Tea Party Downgrade." These are the literal lines that have been drawn: If it's bad for America during Obama's presidency, it's somehow good for the right-wing extremists in the Tea Party and the overall conservative movement, no matter how many fellow Americans suffer. |

I actually have to contest this on two points:
First off, it hardly seemed like a raucus show of support for the downgrade news in that video. Sounds like maybe three of the ten people at the rally were cheering. As for the Olympics video, I think it should be noted that the 2004 host nation pretty much bankrupted itself to host the games... How's Greece doing now? That said, it's one thing to protest getting the games for plausibly sound financial concerns. It's another thing if the contention was solely for personal dislike of our President. I think the opposition was a little bit of both, but grew to an anti-Obama campaign because of the fringe leadership. |
