Libya protests: Gaddafi's son warns of civil war

Sayf al-Islam accuses people outside Libya of provoking the violence

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's son, Sayf al-Islam, has warned that civil war could hit the country.

His comments came in a lengthy TV address to the nation broadcast as anti-government protests spread to the capital Tripoli.

Despite criticising protesters, he also held out the promise of significant political reforms.

He admitted that the police and army had made "mistakes", but said the death toll was far lower than reported.

He said opposition groups and outsiders were trying to transform Libya into a group of small states. If they succeeded, he said, foreign investment would stop and living standards would drop drastically.

Sayf Gaddafi also criticised the foreign media for what he termed their exaggeration of the extent of the violence in Libya.

Earlier unconfirmed reports said Colonel Gaddafi had fled Libya, but his son told state TV viewers that his father remained in Libya "leading the battle".

Notice how long it took Comrade Obama to say ANYTHING about his friend Gaddafi and his mass slaughter of protesters in Libya? Obama, Jerimiah Wright and Louis Farakhan(sp?) have all traveled to Libya to meet the crazy dictator. The Reverend Wright couldn't say enough good things about him.

Gaddafi: Barakeh Obama is friend

Libyan leader praises US president: 'He is of Muslim descent, his policy should be supported, as he now leans towards peace'

Roee Nahmias Published: 04.17.10, 15:15 / Israel News

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi considers the US president a blessing to the Muslim world. In a speech published in London-based al-Hayat newspaper on Saturday, Gaddafi praised Barack Obama, called him a "friend" and said there is no longer any dispute between his country and the US.

Speaking in the Libyan city of Sirt at an event marking the 24th anniversary of an American attack on Libya, he said, "At the time, we were the target of the American cannon, the American navy challenged us in the gulf of Sirt and attacked us all along Libya's shores. America tested Libya, and the Libyan people resisted the large country, but today, thank God, the difference is great."

Libyan leader says Arab nations and 'even the Palestinians' should be allowed nuclear weapons as long as Israel's nuclear ambitions are tolerated. He adds he would oppose Iran acquiring nuclear weapons if it acknowledges such a goal

He said, "Now, ruling America is a black man from our continent, an African from Arab descent, from Muslim descent, and this is something we never imagined – that from Reagan we would get to Barakeh Obama."

Gaddafi stressed that Obama's presidency is "a major historical gain" and said, "He is someone I consider a friend. He knows he is a son of Africa. Regardless of his African belonging, he is of Arab Sudanese descent, or of Muslim descent. He is a man whose policy should be supported, and he should be assisted in implementing it in any way possible, since he is now leaning towards peace."

I didn't know Charlie Sheen was in Libya...

Their ages are 17. They give them pills at night, they put hallucinatory pills in their drinks, their milk, their coffee, their Nescafe.
He and Obama make a perfect pair---two peas in a pod.

Gaddafi says protesters are on hallucinogenic drugs

CAIRO | Thu Feb 24, 2011 3:54pm GMT

CAIRO (Reuters) - Muammar Gaddafi blamed a revolt against his rule on al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on Thursday, and said the protesters were fuelled by milk and Nescafe spiked with hallucinogenic drugs, in a rambling appeal for calm.

Gaddafi, who just two days ago vowed in a televised address to crush the revolt and fight to the last, showed none of the fist-thumping rage of that speech.

This time, he spoke to state television by telephone without appearing in person, and his tone seemed more conciliatory, with much of his country out of government control.

"Their ages are 17. They give them pills at night, they put hallucinatory pills in their drinks, their milk, their coffee, their Nescafe," said Gaddafi.

"They are criminals ... is it logical that you let this phenomenon continue in any city? ... We do not see what is happening in Egypt and Tunisia happening in Libya, ever!"

Talk about bat**** crazy, I was thinking Gaddafi and Beck made quite a pair. Hell, they could take that show on the road, maybe to Niger or the Ivory Coast.

Now that all known American citizens have been evacuated, the Obama administration has announced unilateral sanctions against Libya.

It would have been foolish, even stupid, for him to have done anything while our people were still on Libyan soil. Only a fool wouldn't recognize that.

Notice Comrade Obama STILL has not referred to Gaddafi by name or called on him to resign? He called on Mubarek to resign after about, oh, ten minutes. He doesn't want to make his and Jerimiah Wright's good friend look bad...even as that friend slaughters his own people by the thousands.

Is it time to impeach Obama?

"Muammar Gaddafi is telling the Libyans 'either I rule you or I kill you'."

Libya's UN ambassador denounces Gaddafi

The Libyan ambassador to the UN, who is one of Colonel Gaddafi's oldest friends, denounced the embattled leader on Friday night and urged the world to punish him.[/B]

By Jon Swaine, New York 11:29PM GMT 25 Feb 2011

Abdurrahman Shalgam, an ally of Gaddafi since the pair were teenage radicals in the late 1950s, compared the leader's actions to those of Pol Pot and Hitler and backed the protesters in Tripoli.

In an emotional speech to the UN Security Council in New York, Mr Shalgam, who had previously remained loyal, said: "Muammar Gaddafi is telling the Libyans 'either I rule you or I kill you'." He told the 15 members of the council, who are considering an Anglo-French plan for sanctions against the Gaddafi regime: "We need a courageous resolution from you".

Outside the chamber, he gave another speech in which he pleaded for the outside world to do something "within hours, not days" to stop the bloodshed in the country.

Mr Shalgam said Gaddafi had lost the support of "90 per cent" of his diplomats and predicted further revolution in the middle-east.

"Slavery and the rule of one person is finished – it's finished," he said

Maybe it's time to recognize that there are other issues at stake here that involve the lives of thousands of people in Libya, and that much is happening behind the scenes that is far more important than the good sound bite.

We issued sanctions on Libya minutes after Americans were safely confirmed to be evacuated from the country. That's how leaders handle important decisions in complex situations.

No, no, no, Richard, "leaders" open their mouths and complain about anything and everything the President does, even if it's the correct action that they would have taken themselves were they in his position.

One of the storylines I think that's not being reported on enough during these protests is how many military factions are refusing to fire on peaceful protestors. Ghadafi can say what he likes about killing his people, but the ones who would be responsible for such actions are ignoring the calls, and in come cases apparently leaving the country.

My hope is that the military in Iran is watching... Maybe they will take notes, and the next time there are peaceful protests in thier country, they realize they don't have to listen to their leaders when they call for arms against civilians.
