Obama extends vacation until Tuesday

Dec 30 09:47 AM US/Eastern

US President Barack Obama is extending his vacation stay in his native Hawaii, delaying his return to a divided Washington until January 4, the White House announced Wednesday.

Obama, who landed on Oahu island on December 22, had initially been scheduled to leave the archipelago at the end of the week.

The president, his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha are staying in a beachfront rental home in Kailua, a town located 12 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of the state capital Honolulu.

Obama had initially planned to leave Washington as early as December 18, but he remained in the capital until lawmakers completed an unusually productive year-end session of Congress in which they ratified a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia and repealed a ban on openly gay troops serving in the military.

When he returns to Washington, he will find a Congress where his fellow Democrats lost their majority in the House of Representatives to his Republican foes. Democrats held on to their majority in the Senate, albeit a reduced, razor-thin one.

"After the extended lame duck and five-day delay of his trip here, he's just trying to squeeze in more time with his family before returning to Washington," said Bill Burton, a White House spokesman.

You're joking, right? Did you not read the part about getting out there four days later to begin with? It not extended, it's just shifted.

Why'd I even bother asking if you read it. Of course you didn't.
