USA Today: "Obama shares dreams for his kids in book on 13 Americans" Fox News headline for same story: "Obama praises Indian chief who killed US general" When a Fox news editor was tasked with repackaging a USA Today story on Of Thee I Sing: Letters to My Daughters, President Obama's forthcoming children's book, one paragraph from the story remained exactly the same, but the headline underwent a remarkable transformation. The USA Today piece is headlined "Obama shares dreams for his kids in book on 13 Americans," and describes the contents of the book: questions for his daughters ("Have I told you how wonderful you are?", "Have I told you that you are creative?") and vignettes about famous Americans (Georgia O'Keefe, Jackie Robinson). Fox chose to excerpt the paragraph describing the book's "most controversial choice," Sitting Bull, the Sioux general who gave General Custer a beat-down at Little Bighorn. That paragraph gets bolded, and the entire story gets headlined "Obama Praises Indian Chief Who Killed U.S. General." |
