Federal ATFE agents have been called in after someone poured flammable liquid on four pieces of construction equipment early today at the site of a planned new Islamic center and mosque just outside Murfreesboro.

Carmie Ayash, a spokeswoman for the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, said the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department was contacted around 1:30 a.m. by someone who had seen the fire.
A truck was damaged and other pieces of equipment were doused with gasoline, she said. The equipment is owned by Ole South Properties, but Islamic Center officials had not been able to reach the owners today about the arson.

Ayash said the vandalism at the site “takes it to a whole new level.” A sign on the property, off Bradyville Pike just southeast of Murfreesboro, has been damaged twice by vandals.

“Everyone in our community no longer feels safe,” she said. “To set a fire that could have blown up equipment and, God forbid, spread and caused damage to the neighbors there ... we really feel like this is something that we and the neighbors don’t deserve. Update from this afternoon:

Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a complaint about shots being fired this afternoon near the construction site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro on Veals Road off Bradyville Pike.

A group of congregation members was at the site looking at the damage done to construction equipment by the fire overnight when they heard nine shots fired from two directions.

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. The congregation members reported hearing six shots coming from one direction, and about three minutes later they heard three more shots from another direction, said Saleh Sbenaty, a congregation member and MTSU professor.

He wasn’t sure if the shots were being fired at the Muslim group, but in the aftermath of the fire, he said they felt it necessary to report, the Daily News Journal reported on its website.

When the perpertrators of this crime are found, they should be prosecuted as terrorists. Glenn Beck and every other conservative talk show host, every conservative politician, every conservative pundit and every conservative media outlet should be standing up and strongly condemning any acts such as this.

How awful. Conservatives have indeed succeeded in dragging us back to the 1960s, for race/religion based violence if nothing else.
