Fresh off a brief 27-hour vacation in Florida last week, the Obamas are headed to Martha's Vineyard for 10 days of R & R. The Obamas are staying in a $50,000/week mansion on a 30-acre estate. Moochelle "Antoinette" Obama is still exhausted from her $500,000 trip to Spain and needs another vacation to recover form that vacation.

Obamas to begin sixth holiday of the year

The Obama family will begin their sixth holiday of the year today, an 11-day sojourn in Martha’s Vineyard, the island destination of the wealthy and well-connected American elite.

President Barack Obama will be accompanied by his wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, nine, and are expected to stay at the historic Blue Heron Farm in Chilmark.

Bill Burton, the deputy White House press secretary, said that the US president was “going to spend a little time recharging his batteries” at the Massachusetts island ahead of the November midterm elections.

Barack Obama to spend holidays in Martha's Vineyard“There will be some hiking, some time at the beach, some time at the ice cream store - all the sort of things you do when you’re at Martha’s Vineyard. You enjoy the people and the good food.”

He is also expected to work on his swing at Mink Meadows golf club in Vineyard Haven and to work out every day, as he did when the First Family visited Martha’s Vineyard last year.

One barometer of the plunge in excitement has been the sale of Obama-themed T-shirts, which designers had been banking on after the craze of last year. Clothing labeled with the president’s name sold by the thousands, helping to salvage a tough economic year for the island.

But this year’s T-shirt sales are much less brisk, merchants say.

“Last year, Obama gave you goose bumps, but I don’t think you’re going to see that this year,’’ said Alex McCluskey, co-owner of the Locker Room, who sold more than 4,000 “I vacationed with Obama’’ T-shirts last year. But so far this year, he said, his hot item is T-shirts of former President Bush asking, “Miss me yet?’’

Residents have also noticed a drop in the number of stores with Obama posters on their front windows and homes with signs that welcome the first family.

“We’re so used to presidents coming here,’’ said Sue Tonry of Wicked Martha’s clothing and gift shop in Vineyard Haven. “He’ll be able to get some peace and quiet.’’
