President Obama calls African-Americans a ‘mongrel people’

By Sam Youngman - 07/29/10 11:00 AM ET

NEW YORK — President Obama waded into the national race debate in an unlikely setting and with an unusual choice of words: telling daytime talk show hosts that African-Americans are “sort of a mongrel people.”

The president appeared on ABC’s morning talk show “The View” Thursday, where he talked about the forced resignation of Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod, his experience with race and his roots.

When asked about his background, which includes a black father and white mother, Obama said of African-Americans: "We are sort of a mongrel people."

"I mean we're all kinds of mixed up," Obama said. "That's actually true of white people as well, but we just know more about it."

The president's remarks were directed at the roots of all Americans. The definition of mongrel as an adjective is defined as "of mixed breed, nature, or origin," according to dictionary.com.

I'm sure in Regis' lily-white world the concept of being mixed is insulting and therefore mongrel is considered derogatory. If, however, you don't think there's anything wrong with being of mixed race then you won't find the term mongrel offensive.

I don't think there's an American alive today who isn't a mongrel.

The President with more of his racist blather. Really, Mr. President defining people by their racial make up. We the blacks as compared to you the whites. The President is half white by claiming he is African/American is he claiming that the black part of him is racially dominant thus referring to himself as black or is he claiming to be black, because any significant dilution from being pure white defines you as black? Which is it?

Paul, read Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. It may help you understand why Pres. Obama identifies himself the way he does. If you want those questions answered, go to the source.

I don't care why the President is a racist? Please do enlighten us with quotes from this book, that explain the President's racist views?

My half black son's entire life, he's been told he's biracial. I fill out his school paperwork either marking "Other" or both the black and the white boxes. It's how I filled out my census for in regards to him.

He goes to school, and every other child in his school calls him black. It's just the way things are. If you find it offensive, you change it for YOU. It all starts with one person (such as me making sure my child knows about his white and black heritages, as well as making sure the "powers that be" in his school know he's not one or the other, but both).

Otherwise, you're just making yourself sound ridiculous babbling about President Obama being a racist because he's identifying himself as (most) of the rest of America is...a Black man.
