Detroit Board of Education President Otis Mathis admits he struggles to write coherent sentences, but he believes he's a role model for young students. .... Mathis -- who was placed in special education classes as early as the fourth grade, graduated high school with a 1.8 grade point average and failed an English proficiency exam that held up his graduation at Wayne State University for more than a decade Mathis and another student unsuccessfully challenged the use of an English proficiency test as a requirement for graduation. In 1992, when the case went to trial, the lawsuit gained national attention. Mathis said then his failure to pass the test "made me feel stupid." The requirement was eventually dropped in 2007, and Mathis applied to get his degree the next year, after his election.

Amid allegations that he fondled himself during a meeting with the schools superintendent, Detroit school board President Otis Mathis today admitted engaging in “inappropriate actions” but tried to rescind his resignation......

....In a memo recounting the incident, (Superintendent Teresa) Gueyser alleged that she has had to leave meetings on several occasions due to similar behavior by Mathis in the past. “This is a usual habit of President Mathis during any private meeting with me … most times I try to ignore him,” the memo alleges.

However, the memo alleges, Wednesday was different from other incidents because Mathis “unzipped his pants and pulled a handkerchief from his left pocket, put the handkerchief in his right hand and put his right hand in his unzipped pants again … moving his hand as if to be masturbating in front of me.” What the friggin' heck is wrong with these people?
