Default Laura Bush supports gay marriage and abortion
Oh yes, honey. She does. George isn't very happy. C'est la vie.

She talks with Larry King about the issues. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/...e.abortion.cnn

I don't know why it's so shocking. There are a lot of conservatives out there who have no issues with gay marriage.

Ah. I see. My ex and I were SO opposite on our political beliefs. I liked it though. Kept things exciting.

I guess when one's a politician, and a president at that, your spouse has a sort of moral obligation to, at least publicly, agree with you. It certainly wouldn't have looked very politically correct (literally), if LB had come forth with her opinions while her husband was president.

I appreciate when a woman, especially of her generation can depart from her husbands views and actually express them. Even more so for a woman with such a high profile husband. Good for her.

I think we've all known all along that she is the brains of the marriage.

Good to see you made it over here, Sparks! I guess I tried to edit the wrong post to add that. :slaps forehead:

Most Americans are against Gay marriage including the President of the United States (a Democrat).
Pres. Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment and opposed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. He is for providing all federal benefits and rights in civil unions for same-sex couples, but believes that each state should make the decision on marriage, as states do now. He also supports gay adoption, anti-discrimination laws and has urged the military to repeal "Don't ask, don't tell."

Most Americans were also against allowing inter-racial marriages. They were wrong then, too.

Actually, what DES said sounds more like he's against Federal regulation on the issue.

Right. He's for letting the states decide. But, he's for granting full federal rights, which DOMA now prohibits and which he voted against.

Except for the part about getting married, he is against that. Thus he is willing to discriminate against gays. To end don't ask don't tell all he has to do is sign an executive order and the discrimination ends, but apparently he is willing to accept that example of discrimination also.

Furthermore the President believes that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is Constitutional.

The Justice Department issued a statement saying Obama wants the law repealed "because it prevents LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) couples from being granted equal rights and benefits. However, until Congress passes legislation repealing the law, the administration will continue to defend the statute when it is challenged in the justice system."

Read more: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...#ixzz0opO0iB5C It follows that he believes Congress and therefore a State has the Constitutional right to pass laws that discriminate against gays. It is undeniable that the President is willing to accept discrimination when it is applied to homosexuals. It is therefore unlikely that the President would buy the argument that denying gays the "right" to marry is similar to laws that forbid marriage between people of different races.
