That was the only place that would have them, what with it being a fucking desert and all. All that talk about "the new Zion" was the biggest act of making lemonade out of lemons that there ever has been. They really are some very nice people, sprinkled with their fair share of small town bigshots who think that living higher up on the hill puts them closer to God.

I know everything about mormonism, both real and imagined. I lived in Utah for a few years, had Mormon roommates and coworkers, talked at length about the religion and its history (and argued .a whole lot about how dumb they were for believing the whole stupid story), and even watched a bunch of anti-mormon propaganda (i.e.: The Kingmakers).

I know of what I speak, or I wouldn't speak it. They were just like anybody else. Some very sweet, friendly people. Some assholes that take advantage of those friendly people. Some hypocrites who pretend to follow their religion but really don't. A lot of 25 year old divorced women with 3 kids (who got married as a teenager, had kids quickly, then didn't understand why their marriage fell apart and their husband got into meth). In short, just like anywhere else, but with nicer people and dumber superstitions.

They're a gaggle of pure idiots no better than today's scientologists.. Smith believed in everything from baptizing the dead to magic underwear to his own kingship. They're militant and insular, a completely made up cult that believes John the Baptist, himself, granted them the "Aaronic Priesthood"

It's little wonder they caused strife wherever they settled.. They're a pestilence and it took the wide open space of Utah simply for them to co-exist in peace.
