Conservatism has become so weak in ideas that during the presidency of George W. Bush, the word “conservative” could be and was applied with scant objection to policies that were starkly anti-conservative. Americans witnessed “conservative” Wilsonianism, if not Jacobinism, in foreign policy and an unnecessary foreign war; record “conservative” trade and federal budget deficits; major “conservative” expansions of the power of the federal government at the expense of traditional liberties; and nonchalant “conservative” de-industrialization and dispossession of the middle class in the name of Ricardian free trade and Benthamite utilitarianism. No wonder the American people are confused and disillusioned by conservatism if these are its actions when in power. Were Russell Kirk still with us, what would he now call himself?

Good read.... Sadly, the seem intent on merely replacing the Soviets with a new menace of some sort.. I think the problem with this idea isn't that it's not beneficial, it's that it isn't particularly profitable. The cold war was worth a lot of money.. Networks of cronies coalesced around that spending. Now, they're very powerful. You can see the way the GOP reacts to any threat of a defense cut. I think they just want a new enemy and intend to kick the cold war can down the road.. Now it's the GWOT... But it could be anything, really. So long as there's an enemy. |

So the cold war with russia was a creation of the evil defense contractors? Were they in cahoots with Kruschev? Your naivte is really pathetic. Now, I put up with a lot of this.. From a lot of people. But, it's getting old.. |

Rocat.. We are reaching a point where you're just spamming.. I feel like I have to irritate you guys to make you think. Sorry if it offends you. But I have very strong feelings about what is happening to our country. |

I am just trying to force you and a few others to THINK. I know its irritating and frustrating, but it seems like the only way to get you off of your mindset. The way you are thinking is counterproductive to fixing our mutual problems, which are very very serious. I find you ignorant and annoying. I find your thoughts to be inane... Your entire mindset is juvenile. I'm not voting for Mitt . Just accept that and move on. |
