They knew right down to the penny how much should be deposited in every account.. And how much in checks, cash and credit.

The time clock was in there too.. So all the labor was in and they could see it. Instant margins.

Nobody has this stuff then.. I bet there were banks that weren't set up as well as we were.
We just created an iPhone app that gives all of that sales information to a restaurant owner real time. Instead of having to log in to his computer and run a report, or God forbid call the store manager and ask, all he has to do is look at his phone to check the day's sales and some of the other numbers.

We've come a long way since when I worked for a cash register sales company shortly after leaving the Navy.
Oh yeah.. Watching a sale in real time was prohibitively expensive then.. It would have taken a dedicated connection.. OMG..

Now? I bet there's not a POS system around that doesn't do that..

The internet just changed everything.

There's a pile in it..

Cause, that was about the only way to lay hands on this stuff then from off site.

My main product is something like PCAnywhere, but far more secure and built for POS systems. Instead of remoting in to one site at a time, like PCAnywhere or LogMeIn, and taking over the machine to do what you need to do, we have all of the sites in a company connected to our datacenter via a storeside application running on each of the machines. A technician can open a client on his computer and select when site he wants to look at from a list (some of our resellers cover 1500 or more sites). We monitor the site and send various alerts when things are out of whack. You can transfer files to and from, schedule multiple sites for almost any kind of software update, start and stop services, kill tasks, send commands, run reports, and all kinds of other stuff without actually having to take control of the machine. We can use VNC to connect if we need to, but it's a last resort, unlike the other programs that only have that option. A small team of technicians (or one badass technician) can manage support for 100's of sites spread out over long distances. No longer do you even need to send a technician to the site, unlike the old days when I was working with the mechanical cash registers. We can even create and restore images remotely. If the hardware breaks, a store just has to send it in and a loaner replacement is sent out. The beauty is that the store owner doesn't have to spend a bunch of time fucking with the technology, he just has to run his store/restaurant.

Convenience only gets you so far. For every new feature we come up with to make the job easier, we have to come up with a security enhancement to make sure there are no holes. PCI compliance is serious business.

Yeah, I bet.. When I did this, and when I process credit cards now at the shop.. There's a stand alone terminal with a modem.

If you've got that kind of shit online, that would be a concern..

Could get you sued if you had a data breech and some theft.

$18,000 just to have the forensic auditor come out and do the inspection. You don't have a choice on that. Then it's $75 per replacement card if card numbers were stolen, in addition to whatever other punitive fines the credit card companies decide to levy. Once that is over, then the customers can take a piece of your ass in court.

Mr. M uses some sort of software for his stuff.
I think it's called MOM. He does a lot of internet sales.
It keeps all sorts of information. I sometimes used to help out and I know that when someone called I could tell them what we had in stock and I know that it had all sorts of information that he uses. He uses it for information for marketing and stuff like that for special sales targeting specific customers.
