"...Majorities of First Globals are not doctrinaire liberals. The poll found less than majorities agree with liberals on some of their most cherished beliefs. For example: 44% agree health insurance is a right government should provide for those who can’t afford it, 43% agree with the same statement about food and shelter, 37% agree government should spend more to reduce poverty, 20% agree government spending is an effective way to economic growth and 28% agree government should do more to curb climate change even at the expense of economic growth. (That last number has to hurt environmentalists.) Lest Republicans get too giddy at those findings, they should also know less than majorities agree with these conservative and neo-con ideals: 22% agree it’s sometimes necessary to attack potentially hostile countries rather than waiting until we are attacked, 23% are willing to give up some personal freedoms for the sake of national security, 39% agree cutting taxes is an effective route to economic growth, 24% agree we should eliminate all barriers to trade, 25% agree recent immigration has done more harm than good, 21% agree religious values should play an important role in government and 25% agree homosexuality is morally wrong..." |

It would be very nice if young people were changing their stripes and thinking more like libertarians concerned with freedom than with using the government to ensure equality of outcome. I hope it continues. I don't know if I agree that Ron Paul would really take many votes away from Obama, but it's an interesting thought experiment.
39% agree cutting taxes is an effective route to economic growth, 24% agree we should eliminate all barriers to trade, 25% agree recent immigration has done more harm than good These findings are disturbing, and offer me no hope for youth. The tax cut question is stupid, frankly, and should be reworded to ask if they agree that low taxes are an effective route to government growth. There are many different tax cuts and not all of them are equal. But, young people need to have a better understanding of economics and need to understand the crowding out effect of government spending at all levels. And with only 24% agreeing that barriers to trade need to be removed, that tells me that schools are doing a shit job of explaining to children the harm that tariffs and protectionist policies have done in the past, especially in the lead-up to the Great Depression. This is really a key point if you're going to call yourself a libertarian - you have to believe in free trade. And for immigration, well, we've lost that battle. It's over. All we can do is stop new people from coming in, if we can even do that. There is no way that we'll ever be able to make anybody go home. There simply isn't the political will to do so. That saddens me. |

the term "illegal alien" has been declared racist and must not be used ever again. Did you happen to see the fool on O'Reilly last night trying to make her case for this stupidity? |

... this makes sense because the entire paradigm is a paradox. It's literally a detriment to them.. That largess is how they're to be paid back for their support.. So, no.. It never shrinks... |

It's a smoke screen. Smaller Government and adherence to Constitutional first principles don't help the people who fund elections. |

It's internecine differences, nothing more. Conservatives and libertarians are all under the same umbrella, they just don't always agree about what to have for dinner. Kind of like Lenninists and Trotskyites. Self-described libertarians are usually more ideological and passionate, while conservatives seem to want to be left alone. This sounds simple and clean, but it renders an experiment like ours unworkable.. |
