There is a township here, just north of the city/county seat, which is by far the wealthiest area in our county. Traditionally, that township had a lot of farmland, but in the last 15 years, virtually all the farms have been purchased and are in the process of being developed. I've been doing some work over there, in a gated community where you can't even build a home worth less than $1 million. They won't allow it.
But, what got me to thinking, is the fact that this township is notorious for absurd levels of taxation. They also have an absurd number of services, like a police force twice as large as any comparable unit. Their building inspectors are notoriously difficult to please. So on and so forth. Anyway, the point is, that wealthy people are dying to move there. The rich aren't buying cheap, barely regulated land out in the middle of nowhere. They're spending top dollar, and then some, to live in this high-tax, high-regulation corridor. |
