Default 5 Reasons Torture Is Always Wrong
1. Torture violates the dignity of the human being.

2. Torture mistreats the vulnerable and violates the demands of justice.

3. Authorizing torture trusts government too much.

4. Torture dehumanizes the torturer.

5. Torture erodes the character of the nation that tortures.

I disagree with all of the above. Assigning everything to an "always do" or "never do" category is simply unrealistic.

'Long ago, German philosopher Immanuel Kant wrote about the perennial human tendency to find exceptions to moral rules when the rules bind a bit too tightly on us: "Hence there arises a natural … disposition to argue against these strict laws of duty and to question their validity, or at least their purity and strictness, and, if possible, to make them more accordant with our wishes and inclinations, that is to say, to corrupt them at their very source, and to entirely destroy their worth."'

If you're going to use the word torture...then no discussion can be had until it's definition is agreed upon. Which it isn't. /thread.

"Among the sometimes approved measures have been prolonged standing, removal of detainees' clothing, sensory deprivation, hooding (often with smelly hoods), prolonged interrogations, use of dogs, forced shaving of beards, grabbing, poking, pushing, sleep manipulation and deprivation, and waterboarding (which refers to a variety of techniques designed to make a victim feel as if he were drowning).

Among the unapproved but practiced measures have been punching, slapping, and kicking detainees, religious and sexual humiliation, prolonged shackling, exposure to severe heat or cold, food or toilet deprivation, mock or threatened executions, and letting dogs threaten or in some cases bite and severely injure detainees."

You get what you get if you're a dickhead.

3. Authorizing torture trusts government too much. and then I was like ...well !

1) Simplistic.

2) Inapplicable.

3) Debatable.

4) Situational.

5) Baiting.

Christianity is moot; morality being suspended with the onset of hostilities. A conflict must be won, not attractively packaged for the sake of a weak stomach. The timidity of a wavering mass shall forgive any excess, where victory is secured. As we all know, history impugns only defeat.

Philosophy is dead.

People need solutions. And conclusions.

Had the Germans won WWI or WWII, Germans today wouldn't be ashamed of the horrors their armies perpetuated during both wars. Victory is a powerful amnesiac.

I agree.

Victory rewrites atrocity as necessity and imposition. The difference being that losses are that bit less pointless.

America, Britain and our gallant Soviet allies never committed any atrocities! Only the losers did things like that.

Kind of like our firebombing of Dresden and dozens of Japanese cities. Had to be done, horrible though it was.

Nobody said that. I was using Germany as an example, seeing as they lost both wars and committed some pretty severe atrocities in both. We often think of the Nazis, but the Kaiser's boys murdered a lot of civilians and prisoners as well. Had they won, I wouldn't have used them as an example, nor would they feel so bad about their nation's history.

Quite right, Scorpio.

One atrocity is so much less atrocious than another (sarcasm off). I assure you, they'd be much harder to swallow had we suffered defeat.

Not as though we were left with a plethora of options. Half measures don't address extremity.

Any indignation after the fact is merely luxury. And perhaps more than a little dishonest, in light of the far greater indignities we'd have suffered had we lost.

Does one tickle a killer's feet with a feather?

Or does one kill him first?
