I think some of the people in "this great nation of ours" (Palin-speak) mistakenly perceive themselves as being conservative when, in fact, they recieve a goodly portion of Washington largess.
labels are rarely accurate. but what is accurate is the democrats and liberals are supported by those supported by the government.

so if you oppose govt giveaways, then you might be conservative.

I consider myself a conservative, but it's got a broad meaning.

From a personal standpoint, I am conservative. I watch what I spend, don't overextend myself, and expect my kids to be the same as my husband & me - do the right thing, and succeed on your own through hard work, smart moves, and without anyone offering a "hand up" (which I call a "hand out"). I'm not religious, but I believe that religion is important and respect those who follow religious teachings. I don't believe in abortion, and don't believe in discounting marriage vows, but I also believe the second isn't my business. I don't care what others do in their bedroom. I believe in following laws, whether I agree with them or not. I believe everyone who isn't a felon should be able to carry a gun.

From what I expect of the government, I want them to stay the hell away from me as often as possible. I believe that cities/towns and states should have pre-emption over federal laws, should be the only ones to collect taxes from me, and should be there when I need my tax money spent, and otherwise, stay the hell away from me.

I believe in a strong defense because I think there are a lot of nuts in this world. I believe that our Federal government is too big, and 90% of it should be eliminated.

I don't care about gay marriage because it doesn't impact me at all. Live and let live.

I believe that education is what a kid & his parents make of it, and Arne Duncan shouldn't be responsible for my kids.

I believe that "charity" should come from within a community or from those who are inclined and equipped to take care of those who can't care for themselves, and I don't believe it's the obligation of every US citizen to be the helper of all.

I believe that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed, but I also believe that there is a natural imbalance in life, and not everyone is created equal or has equal capacity. Some will prosper, some won't, but it's up to each of us to set our course in life.

I believe that it's good when corporations make a profit because they employ people, and those people have resources to give back, and so on. I don't believe a corporation is obligated to exist to "create jobs".

It was put in place to encourage home ownership. Would you prefer that everyone became a renter?

Should owners of rental property be allowed to take interest deductions? If no, what would that do to rents?

It really pays to think these things through before taking a stand on them

Energy subsidies--yes, remove them. let all energy sources compete on an equal basis. You do realize that this would increase gas prices at the pump don't you?

Farm subsides---yes, remove them, stop paying farmers to leave land idle to prop up prices.

We have a spending problem.. We need to address all of it.

The Constitution would fix it if we'd just follow it and stop being stupid.

Yes, and what did we hear from obozo last night? More spending. When he says "investment" it means more taxes to support more govt programs---------the socialist bastard must be replaced or the US as we know it is over.

Ok! And lets do away with the Income Tax completely. I have no problem with giving up the Mortgage interest deduction as long as there is no income tax.
Excuse me, but we have an army of federal dick grabbers to pay.. Along with a couple of wars and cowboy poetry..

IMO, Republicans are completely conflicted here.. They either need to get serious about shrinking government, or they need to raise the revenue to fund it..

Kicking the can down to the unborn is criminal.. It shouldn't be permitted.

Now, I'm fine with practically no federal government and a tax bill that reflects that.. Anyone who isn't has a decision to make.

I believe that, above all, to be a Conservative you have to believe in Constitutional first principles..

This is the major gulf between Conservatives and Liberals. They want a government that does everything, Conservatives realize that this is imprudent and explicitly disallowed by law.

As UW points out, Conservatism places emphasis on the rights of the individual to pursue their dreams unmolested.. It de-emphasizes the importance of government at the federal level and is generally distrustful of federal influence. Conservatives must be friendly to legitimate commerce, as this is a function of free persons in a free country. Conservatives believe in a right to self defense and frown on ill gotten gains of all types.. and support strict punishment for those who fuck up the polite society that permits a free and moral people to go about their business and pursue happiness.
