In my dealings with women on welfare, there is no knowledge of nutrition. They look towards convenience. There's the one dollar menu at one of the fast food places. One of my clients didn't even know where vegetables came from except cans ....REALLY! Now admittedly they had no paycheck what-so-ever except for their welfare grant, but once they gained employment they didn't miraculously have knowledge of basic nutrition or how to prepare low cost meals that would actually help their children thrive and they to become healthy. Edit: I agree. Shitty food is cheaper and more convenient. Fresh vegetables have to be prepared for before they lose their vitamins browning in the fridge. It actually takes planning and preparation to have tasty and healthy meals, and both fat and poor people aren't usually into doing things that require work or planning. |
