I'm forming a theory on this.. I'm not quite there yet though. We're not just talking about pat, economic soundbytes here.. It's complicated.
From my perspective, we know it's true that: 1) Economies can grow and assimilate more people.. They require more people for growth. 2) That you can dump labor just like you can dump anything else. Driving down the cost of labor, at least in the short term. Even if these people are eventually absorbed, there remains a question of how long that will take. 3) Labor isn't necessarily fungible on a global scale.. You can say it is, but the reality is that it is not.. and for a variety of reasons. (Many people aren't able to just pick up and go to China, for example. Importing labor from other countries has cultural and demographic implications. Skill levels can be changed over time, but the fact remains that there are classes of labor at any given moment. Etc.) 4) Using the term "Labor" de-humanizes quite a bit.. Because "Labor" is also synonymous with: American citizens, Taxpayers, the Tax Base, VOTERS ( |
