Default Bring back the WPA
Right-wing nuts are always screaming that the government should not create jobs. Well the government did exactly that to help us get out of the Great Depression. FDR created the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps. The WPA put my grandfather to work when his farm went bankrupt during the depression. Instead of standing in bread lines, he was able to go to work every day doing something useful for the country and earn a decent paycheck and feed his family.

Americans want to work. They don't want to be stuck on unemployment or living in a relative's basement. Our tax dollars are paying out welfare anyway. Why not create jobs? There are things crumbling in our infrastructure, and there are Americans willing and able to fix them for a decent wage.

Enough of waiting for the free market to create jobs by itself. Relying on that just makes sweat shop jobs in China and Vietnam show up. FDR was a good American who created jobs for Americans. Fuck all those right-wing assholes who piss and moan about supposed "socialism" (who don't even understand it). There's nothing wrong with the government creating jobs, as long as they're creating services that are good for America. The Dock Street Theater was created by the WPA. Roads and bridges were built. School houses were painted.

Herbert Hoover thought we should just wait till the market cleared up the depression. If we had followed him, American families would have just continued to starve. The market left unchecked would just create a massive peasant class and a small number of super rich. That kind of system didn't make America strong. A strong middle class did. Today's Republican extremists have gone so far right, they've gone right out of the country. They've made war on the middle class, and we've let them. They took the house claiming they wanted to create jobs, but upon assuming power, spewed the bullshit that the government should not create jobs. Well, they should. Bring back the WPA. Restore America's pride and get people back to work!

And for the brain dead who think WPA kind of work programs are Marxist, you need remedial education. It's Keynesian economics, not Marxism. Read up on it.

Our tax dollars are paying out welfare anyway. Why not create jobs? Because it doesn't work.. This is part & parcel of the broken windows fallacy.

What brought us out of the depression was WWII.

We were left as an industrial powerhouse, front loaded with tons of unused manufacturing capacity, while the rest of the developed world was a smoking ruin.

We have decided we don't like industrialization anymore.. We'd rather have cheap goods from commie slaves. We want expensive energy to encourage conservation. We want regulations and red tape (which are taxes) to raise the cost of doing business. We want to permit banks to make revolving margins at the fed window, as opposed to making money by loaning money. We want a lot of things which are at odds with economic expansion and prosperity.

So, there are no jobs.

It worked for my grandfather and for countless other American families. Instead of standing in bread lines, they went back to work and earned their keep. And no one's for deliberately breaking a window just so it can be fixed. The jobs created should be for real things that need to be done. There are plenty of potholes that need to be filled and bridges in disrepair that need to be fixed without deliberately vandalizing them.

We want a stock market that is more about gambling and speculation than capitalizing productive industry and creating the products and services that people want and need. We want crony industries to be declared winners in the market, thereby destroying investment and re-directing it in ways that have nothing to do with economic growth and expansion.

FDR did such a good job that a Constitutional amendment was passed restricting persons to two terms as president, proving that on occasion the American public does learn from their mistakes.

It's welfare. Let's just be honest.

It's not a "job" it's a handout. We don't need to pay people to plant trees... They need the money, though. So we give it to them and ask for some token labor in return.

And no one's for deliberately breaking a window just so it can be fixed. The jobs created should be for real things that need to be done. There are plenty of potholes that need to be filled and bridges in disrepair that need to be fixed without deliberately vandalizing them. I am aware of that, but like broken windows.. You are re-allocating funds and you witness the results without considering what growth would have been stimulated and supported if the funds had been allocated by the people who earned them in the first place.

If you let DC do it, they're going to hand it off to their crony pals.. and you'll get shit-pennies in return.

That is what we heard as the reason for the first stimulus package. What we got was shit like tunnels for turtles so they could cross under highways instead of running the risk of getting squashed by cars. There was also the crap of putting shrimp on treadmills. It appears damn little of the money intended for actual infrastructure projects under the first stimulus was used for infrastructure projects. In other words the nigger lied. So why should we trust the coon now?

Correction, they made a mistake by passing the two-term limit. If that hadn't existed, we could have kept the President who balanced the budget. We could have kept Clinton instead of getting Dubya who started two unnecessary wars and passed an unfunded Medicare prescription drug benefit, throwing the budget way out of balance. We would have been better off keeping Clinton. The two-term limit was just a gimmick. We should get rid of it or at least change it to three.

So you know better than the majority of Americans at that time? Bullshit.

As concerns medicare, Obamacare cut $500 billion from that program.

It was always intended as crony money.. It can come back in return for votes.. Or as campaign contributions.. Or end up in an account in the Caymans.. Who knows?

What we do know is we got shrimp on a treadmill in return.

Texas balanced its budget with stimulus money. Gov Perry bitched about socialism, reckless Federal spending, and blah, blah, blah, but was quite willing to take his cut. Same thing with Governor Heineman of Nebraska. That money that the black guy "recklessly" spent sure came in handy.

Clinton didn't balance anything.. Republicans controlled congress.

And, in real terms, there never was a "surplus"

It never existed.. Do you think we went from a "surplus" and all future obligations funded, to owing 15T since Clinton?

Another whopper of a lie. Obama found 500 billion worth of overpayments, in other words, waste, that he redirected. No Medicare benefits were cut. Of course, if he had let the waste stand, then they would have bitched about the waste. As usual, the fascist right is determined to bitch about Obama no matter what he does. If he had passed the most economically viable health care system on the planet, single-payer, they would have bitched about that as supposed "socialism." So instead he passed Republican-style care and they bitched about that as supposed "socialism," but somehow it wasn't that when passed it.
