There's an article here from Der Spiegel.. It's about 4 pages.. but it's very interesting reading.

Basically, it showcases the problems the EU is facing all around.. and gives a voice to the affected, and explores their perspective on the EU's failure to live up to its promises..

It covers the street protests, the plight of young engineers, physicists, bartenders, etc.. and (ostensibly, because I guess it could also be a propaganda piece) attempts to discover what they want and expect from the "new" Europe. Perhaps the most shocking revelation is a few lines from one of the framers of the EU, where he asks openly: "Do Europeans even want the European Union anymore?"

It's Spiegel, so the whole thing has a sort of leftist bent... with the authors salting in suggestions here and there.. But, reading it.. You're REALLY STRUCK with the diversity of opinion across Europe. It seems that everyone knows something is wrong, but don't quite know what to do about it, or even who to attack... to the point they draw parallels to Franz Kafka's Novel "Castle"

It's also impossible not to draw parallels between their plight and our own. The fallout is the much same (Massive debt, unemployment, disaffected youth buried in debt, a general loss of hope.. Bureaucratic thumb twiddling and even more bureaucratic "solutions" Apathy. Intransigence. Greed.. Etc.)

The challenge: If you were given a brief audience with this group to address their issues.. What would you tell them to do to resolve it?

How would you fix it, and how would you sell your solution to a group as diverse as this one?

If you were given a brief audience with this group to address their issues.. What would you tell them to do to resolve it? Off the cuff(first response), dissolve the union and withdrawal into national interests/currencies and rebuild trading relations from the ground up. The EU is primarily a union that was supposed to provide trans-national economic power, but it's back fired considerably, and its benefits don't seem to outweigh its sudden crisis. The main losers would be the Baltics and Romania. EU membership has benefitted those members considerably. It's winners would be the Western members. Strangely the fate of Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland are up in the air if the union were dissolved. Could be worse, or paradoxically could be better. I forgot China. China would be a loser, but only temporarily.
