Why are Middle Eastern looking Persians, who in England or in Australia where I grew up would not be perceived to be white are obsessed with being white?

You never see Arabs from Syria who could pass for European say they are white, why do Persians think they are somehow White or Whiter than Lebanese/Syrians/Iraqis who never identify as such.

It's kind of funny that Iranians have this whiteness fetish while Turks who are closer to Euros both racially and culturally don't.
BTW in Georgia when someone looks really brown and woggy (like my Dad) we joke about him being Persian or smth like that. I was surprised when I first saw some Westerners seriously arguing about Iranian Aryans and etc.
Then again Iran is an interesting country and pretty developed by Middle Eastern standards so if they manage to elect normal leaders they could build a prosperous society.

It's hard to say who's "whiter": Lebanese or North Iranians (I tend to gi with the former) but Iran in general is to South Asian admixed - they have plenty of folks who would pass as Indians/Pakistani without a problem.

Xenophon says that the ancient Persians were white. As for the modern ones I've noticed that the ones obsessed with whiteness mention their ancient past, with ancient influenced tatoos etc, the same ones also seem to be ashamed of the Arabic elements in their culture.

Coastal Lebanese have a lot of mediterranean admixture and many can pass as SE Europeans without problems. I guess Northern Iranians have a lot of Turkic/Central Asian influence and have less mediterranean admixture. Northern Iranians have some North Euro admixture though and can produce Polish looking individuals though.

Iranians only show 5% south asian (indian) but they do show 25% West central asian component, which is a Balochi (western pakistani) component, not indian

That West Central Asian is quite probably something hybrid made up from West Asian and South Asian alleles (much like SW Asian is more or less a mix of Med and East African).
