I realize that the title is a sweeping generalization, but I needed to sum up the central issue succinctly enough in the limited space I was afforded there. After reading this article (and the lovely comment beneath the article, posted twice for extra emphasis), I can't help but have extreme reservations in accepting or even associating myself with anyone who designates themselves as anti-Zionist. This isn't to say that legitimate criticisms can't be made against Israel, but I find the vociferousness of a large portion of the criticism to be ominous and profoundly alarming.

First every ethnic group should have sovereignty. The problem arises when two or more group claim the same land as their own. This has caused all the recent wars directly or indirectly since both sides "know" they are right and justified.
I have a unique perspective on this since particular case despite being an American I have worked with both Israelis and Palestinians. First a simple history: After WWII the Allies created Israel and promoted Zionism with out any negotiating with the local Palestinians who have been living there for thousands of years. This was the BIG mistake and has caused either directly or indirectly all the Middle Eastern tension we have seen the last 60-70 years. Both sides have a legit claim to the land and people just down right hate each other even to the point of insanity. I know Israelis who would kill a Palestinian in cold blood and also know Palestinians who would kill an Israeli in cold blood. Unfortunately both sides really pile on the propaganda. Israel creates American sympathy since they are a democracy and take advantage of previous American policy of promoting and supporting democracies worldwide. The Palestinians claim they are being occupied by an intolerant tyrant created by foreign Zionists who have no claim to the land they are occupying. Zionist are not Nazis nor is anti-Zionism racist but each group exaggerates by talking about the extremists on the other side. So can this be resolved ? It can't! Both sides "know" they are right and are willing to die for it. |
