I was messing around with the GSS for a bit, and I thought it'd be interesting to use it to make another thread(the first one is here), though a bit more general this time. I'm not really that interested in Americans as Americans(you're still pretty cool though!) as much as I'm interested in seeing how different ethnic groups compare to one another in a similar setting.
Just to make it clear: French - French+French Canadian. Germanic - Germans, Swiss, and Austrians. Asian - Chinese, Japanese, and Pinoys. C Euros - Czech and Hungarians. N Euros - Scandos+the Dutch. S Euros - Greeks, Spaniards, and Portuguese(yes I understand that it doesn't make much sense to include both East and West Meds in the same category). E Euros - Russians, Latvians, Yugoslavs and Romanians(yes, this makes even less sense, I'm aware - I have my reasons though). And for the religions everyone is Caucasian. Number of close friends: ![]() ![]() Basically all gentile minorities have few friends(though the Asian sample is way too small), as well as Italians, oddly. That's sort of interesting, cause I always assumed Blacks, Hispanics, and Italians were more social and extroverted, on average. Another interesting case is the N Euros, who are much less likely to have few close friends compared to other Euros - I'm not sure why. The least lonely Americans are the Jews, who tend to be pretty sociable people on average - they don't tend to have a shit load of "close friends" like some Euros, though(maybe that's just the relatively small sample size to blame). Number of people the respondent has been keeping in contact with: ![]() ![]() Here we see the same pattern - gentile minorities(+Italians, as well as S Euros and E Euros this time) tend to keep in touch with fairly few people, while Jews are the least likely to keep in contact with only a small group of people(as well as C Euros, though the sample is a bit on the small side). N Euros are much more similar to other Euros here, though. Spending evening with relatives: ![]() ![]() S Euros and Hispanics are the most likely to spend the evening with their relatives(which makes sense I guess, since they have the reputation for being family orientated), followed by Amerindians, Blacks, and Italians. Jews, Brits, and N Euros are the least likely to spend time with their families. Spending evening at the bar: ![]() ![]() Looking at the Amerindian stats, I doubt this has any relations to alcoholism rates. The Brits are, interestingly, the least likely to go to bars out of all Euros. Sort of surprising, cause afaik, that doesn't apply to actual Brits at all. And lol@Catholic column vs. Protestant column. |
