So its known that African descendant peoples originated from different parts of Africa. Many have even claimed Haitians have majority Benin ancestry. Slaves were taken from all thoughout Africa and brought to the West coast for shipping and sales. However it has also been documented that the majority of slaves lived or were from West Africa.
Can anyone say that the majority of slaves are from ethnic groups found within West Africa? And as far as African descended people such as African Americans, Caribbeans, and Haitians do they relate more through a single region or from a shipping point found in the coastal areas? Is it possible that they can trace ancestry to a region in West Africa or would it be moreso inaccurate because of so much admixture and travel between so many ethnic groups? Do you believe that Aframs have more relativeness to varied ethnic groups in Africa than the rest of African descended people( who would relate maybe to fewer ethnic groups as far as Dna and phenotypes)? |

Awall,
Well I can tell you there are AfroColombians with surnames that are slave port city names in Africa like Carabali which is a corruption of Calabar...the slave port in Nigeria...this indicating their African ancestors were brought from the Calabar slave port in Nigeria. Like you said though, that does not indicate they were from Calabar, they were captured from elsewhere, not too far, but probably not directly in Calabar. I can imagine they had to be from different areas near Calabar though. No one is going to bring people all the way from like Mozambique to Calabar, Nigeria imo. |

Awall, I agree an I also thought that slave snatchers tended to stick close to the coastal areas rather than travel mainland and far places. |
