Default Examples of Cultural Misunderstandings
A black man yelling and threatening an elderly Korean couple. His violent behavior was the result of a misunderstanding, of the elderly man's comment to him. The elderly man reportedly said ""Niga Yuh gi anja", which means "You can sit here". The man not knowing Korean, thought the old Korean man said, the N-word... Which led to his violent outburst.

I guess my example I posted before of eating with Japanese people. I was served miso soup without a spoon and didn't want to drink it out of a bowl even though that is perfectly fine in their culture - it's considered rude in mine.

I thought I was going to have to break up a fight. Every Friday evening, there is this Afghan dude who sets up a food stand near where I live. He sells this one bean dish, I can never remember what it's called, but it's damn good. Anyways, I decided to pick some up to go with some left over chicken and rice I had. At the stand, the Anglo lady behind me was looking at what I bought, and the Afghan dude asked if she would like some. She replied "No, I don't like worms".

He got very mad and yelled at her, I guess he thought she was insinuating that Afghans ate worms. But the Anglo population here as slang sometimes refers to beans as worms. Anyways, she apologized for saying that and he apologized for misunderstanding and that was that. Then when she left, he admitted to me he was kind of embarrassed that he misunderstood.

I guess, since it is the Ethiopian New Year, Americans might think that we're celebrating 9/11 when we're actually celebrating our new year. I'm always afraid that this misunderstanding might happen.
