Me either, not the way he expressed it anyway. He seemed very confused. But there are many people here (Sweden) who is torn between the old and the new ways of doing stuff. Some people want to be ultra modern city rats and some want to be and live more traditional.

There are some things about white people that bother me. I don't think it's a racial thing more of a cultural thing because I see these traits also among Westernized people who are not of European origin (ie black Americans). We (whites) are insenstive for one thing, and dismiss anyone going through emotional pain or suffering from a mental illness as "crazy" or "emo". We often let ourselves be used as doormats and are not assertive enough. Riots started in many countries over food prices, which are ridiculous, but non in "white" countries even though there are people hungry here too.

I am by no means a self hater I just think these are areas we can improve upon.

Dave, I wouldn't take it too personal, what was said to you on the other thread by Arminfrench and some of the other Mexican national posters. The fact of the matter is, these issues of native identity are a much bigger deal for them than for us (in the USA), because they have more serious social ramifications there than they do here. I think they are more concerned about improving the situation in their own country, not entertaining notions of racial identity by Americans, and I can't blame them for that. You just happened to step up as the stereotype of the anglicized gringo claiming native heritage, so you caught the heat.

Now on this subject of racial identity and self-hate, versus racial pride, I have some paradoxical views.

I have primarily Anglo ancestry and cultural heritage. However, it is not the Anglo culture that you would find in the UK today. My Anglo ancestors, for the most part, departed England over 300 years ago. They brought a language and culture with them. 300 years is a long time, especially factoring in the integration with other cultures, the wars, etc. That was a fork in the road, 300 years ago, and we have gone our separate ways culturally since then.

So while I do feel kinship with the early English pioneers, who are my ancestors and did pass a culture down to me, I feel very little kinship to the English people of today. My true ancestral culture, on that side of my family, is Southern Appalachian culture, which is unique and not found anywhere else in the world. There are things I hate about the UK and their modern culture, like the spineless way they reacted to their riots. I feel confident that my own very distinct Anglo-derived culture would have enacted the sort of brutal crackdown that I would strongly support.

Similarly, I have my Japanese ancestry, my closest generational link to a foreign culture. In this case, we are talking about my grandmother who was born in the late 1920's, and left Japan after the war with my grandfather, who was a foreign military occupier. She was not raised in this post-war modern era of Japan which, while having its own merits, is to me a pale shadow of the militaristic and dominant culture of Imperial Japan. So, once again, here is a case where my own cultural identity with a people is based on a throwback to older (more militant and brutal imperialist) cultures, not their modern day incarnations.

So if I think police in the UK are pussies, or that Japanese youths are urbanized cyber-dorks, that does not make me a self-hater.

Here's another interesting paradox. Had there been no unconditional surrender and relatively peaceful military occupation of Japan, I wouldn't exist. You could carry that a step further, and say that had Japan not been nuked, there would have been a brutal land invasion, and my grandmother could have died, or never met my grandfather in any case. Similarly, a Mexican with mixed Spanish and native ancestry would not exist, if not for the conquistadors and their invasion and assimilation of native people. That doesn't mean nuking people or wiping them out with steel weapons and foreign diseases is a good thing to do, but it is a fact of history, and it is the reason people like me, and you too Dave, exist.
