Those hipsters and yuppies have no roots because their parents or grandparents relocated to the suburbs, in quite a few cases 'encouraged' to do this through the blockbusting tactics employed by real estate agents purposefully trying to depress property values by bringing in minorities. So it seems to me that many of the neighborhoods that are being gentrified have come full circle, and they shouldn't be complaining. Hypocrites.
That's not the case with Hell's Kitchen but I don't particularly care. Life is about change and I rather be surrounded by yuppies than thugs.

I don't get the feeling my views would go down very well in NYC bars. In a city filled with Jews, nig-nogs and Paddies
You're one of the old WASPy looking guys talking about Reagan in the video. They shut you up real good

Don't fuck with The Westies (although they don't exist anymore)

Sleepers. Revenge Scene

Sleepers, despite being portrayed as a true story, is not but the author makes these two characters gangsters from Hell's Kitchen. I love the scene and so I threw it in.
Yeah, I wouldn't get involved in political discussions with any dodgy Irish American people, except over the net. They are more nationalistic than the actual Irish.

I'd read about the Westies before, but I haven't seen Sleepers; in fairness don't they kill that guy for non-gang related reasons (according to the synopsis it was a more personal thing).

The Irish may be tough, but Ulster has produced its fair share of scary people.

Reagan was a Mick though, if the Irish were ever going to back a Republican it would surely have been him! Bush family FTW!

So there is not a large number of Jews, Irish people and Black people relative to where I live? I think you will find that there is. Don't speculate on how I was raised pal, or I'll assume you were raised in a drug infested shanty town and were raised to machine gun rival drug dealers; ain't nice to have assumptions made is it?

Yeah, the character they killed raped them in juvenile hall (kid prison) when he worked as a guard.

Reagan was a Mick though, if the Irish were ever going to back a Republican it would surely have been him! Bush family FTW! Reagan was also Scots-Irish.

What's funny to me is so far the photos of stereotypes are more realistic than the photos of the supposed "reality."

How many professional Puerto Rican baseball players or astronauts are there compared to street thugs? Couldn't you post a photo of an electrician, which would be more realistic?

When my mom went to the US (she went about 20 years ago tho) she said she thought Washington D.C. was far more intimidating than NYC. Obviously as a White woman she wasn't entering ghettoes, but she said there were dodgy looking Black people in D.C.

20 years ago, Washington DC was very dodgy (I'd know, I was raised there). That's around the time you would see between 400-500 murders annually. This, despite the fact that DC had approx, 600,000 people (400 murders for example, would be the equivalent of 66.7 homicides per 100,000 inha.―that's well above the median average).

Demographically, DC then, was also very different than it is now. Between 1970 and 2000, DC was ~71.0% and 60.0% black respectively (mostly AfrAm). As of 2011, the number's dipped to under 50% (with the number of Africans and west indians becoming increasingly more relevant than AfrAms―though AAs are still the majority).

But I gotta be honest, most of the crime/violent crime occurring in late 80s/early 90s DC was concentrated on the notorious southside (east of the Anacostia). I'm talking like more than three-quarters of the murders would happen in the southeast quadrant. More specifically, the bulk of the killings would happen in between wards 7 (Naylor Gardens) and wards 8 (Barry Farm and Washington Highlands). Another notable difference in those days, was the number of times a homicide would go unsolved. Almost nobody went to prison for killing someone in those days, because no one was willing to talk. At the end of 1991 for example, only some 50 percent of the homicides that occurred in Washington had been solved. Just to clarify something, that's on the year, that doesn't include the number of times a witness would get cold feet and refuse to testify in court (usually allowing the killer to walk free).

Nowadays, with the increase in snitching, it's almost impossible to commit murder and get away with it. Which has made present-day DC criminals MUCH less brazen. That being said, I was raised in the northwest of the city (which was also very black) and I never had any problems. Your mom's just a pussy.

Indeed, the pretending "reality" stuff is as biased as the "stereotypical" one

Showing some black dudes in Armani outfits isn't gonna erase the things people see everyday in their lives

Gentrification: the solution to all social problems. I had to laugh when I read that people in the Bronx were complaing about middle-class white people moving in. 'Oh no, you are taking our horrible, decaying, crime-ridden ghetto and turning it into a place where people would actually want to live.' Yes, compelling argument.
I wish there was a gentrification button.

I cant assume how you were raised based on your "race" however based on your comments, YOUR words I can Speculate, and make assumptions. YOU assuming that I'm from a drug infested, crime ridden area, and likely a gang member. Would be based on nothing but the fact that I'm black. ie. RACISM

Are you being serious or sarcastic.

If you are serious, please look at the first two carefully and look at the pics under the REALITY headline.

If you''re being sarcastic.....hehe

Right. There is nothing wrong with a little classism as long as it is based on attitude, behavior and mentality and not on purely material wealth or biological conceptions of race. What is important is social capital, which is in your (collective) head(s).

I think a few other users could attest the fact I am one of the less racist members of these boards, I used the words flippantly; nig nog is hardly the same as saying, 'dirty soulless negro animals' is it? It is really quite an affectionate term, as is Paddy.

I was merely pointing out that my combination of 'right-wing', anti-crime, anti-welfare and Ulster Unionist views would alienate me among certain groups.

Reagan was also Scots-Irish.
Perhaps, but who knows where his loyalties lay? I suspect he would have been a Unionist given he was a Republican, but I could be wrong.
