Ok. I am going to Turkey in a few weeks with my boyfirnd who is Turkish, ok this is the first time im going to Turkey. He wants me to meet his family -even though we havent been dating that long. I know people are gonna stare at me, he already told me, but he said they are gonna stare in a friendly/curious way.
I wanna hear from Turkish people, what kind of things should i do as a woman. First and foremost I want to be myself. I would like people like Curious Cat and Kyte to comment because they normally have informative posts about Turkey. Oh forgot to mention that He has already told his family about me and they like my pics ![]() |

As your bf said, people may stare out of curiosity, there isn't any racism per say, its unlikely you will feel discriminated against. It depends on your personality, do you like attention from strangers, do you like being asked questions and do you have thick skin? if so... Turkey will be a piece of cake. You will love it. If however, you do not like the above, you may get a bit stressed out! In addition an important factor is, Which part of Turkey you are going to be at, is it a City, a town or a village? each of these places has there own positives and negatives. They have there own ways to behave in each area. How to behave generally depends on where you are and with who, as a woman they don't like "loud" talking women, so when you are in a cafe on the bus or in public generally, people prefer to speak to one another in hushed tones, its not just women, men are like that too. As a woman try to be "helpful" to the Mother in law, ask to help pour some tea, or do some washing up or whatever they love that stuff. Again clothes and stuff depends on which part of Turkey you are at. It would help if you told us where you are going to be, whether its a town or village or are you in the city, and where is your BF family from, are they religious etc... ![]() btw there are MANY black people in Turkey. Especially in Adana near the Incirlik airbase, in Istanbul, in Ankara and also some villages, but the village onces you wont probably ever meet! |

I love Turkey, but then again they're used to English people so we don't generate a reaction when we go there; I think their reaction to Blacks is different. A Black guy my dad knows went on holiday to, IIRC, Bodrum (so very touristy) and aside from all of the waiters in the hotel wanting pictures with him (that was probably due to him pretending he was a porn star
![]() I suppose it depends on where you go. I imagine that in the peasant villages they will react with curiousity. Then again others are much more qualified than I to answer this query. I just decided to throw in my two cents, or lira ![]() |

Porn star... lol
---------- Post added 2011-06-28 at 02:14 ---------- Just uncovered a fascist law of Turkiye; upon citizenship 'non-Turkish' names are forbidden. I don't know how true that it.... ---------- Post added 2011-06-28 at 02:18 ---------- In fact hang on my Canadian friend Lisa just got her Turkish citizenship too. She didn't need to change her name either... Aurelio must have wanted to do it himself. |

Thats very useful , thanks. I didnt mention we are going to a touristic Coastal Area in Antalya. No they are not religious. Phew. lol ![]() If they are non religious, you don't need to worry about anything, Antalya is a pretty modern place, people walk about in tiny vests and shorts with flip flops! Then coastal people have a culture of interacting with non Turks anyway... the fact they are used to tourists is a big bonus. Like I said, just smile at the mum a lot, ask to help out, shoes off at the door, pretend you love her food even if its nasty... that kinda thing.. Hope u have a fab time n enjoy! |
