indians pretty much have the most diverse native phenotype of any people on earth. many north indians could easily pass as italians, others could pass as middle eastern people such as iranians. some other groups could easily pass as south american latinos/mestizos. in eastern india some of them look like south east asians but i thinkt hat is because of mixing with tibeto-burman people in the past.
some other indians in the south look like mullatos but with straight/wavy hair.

Tamils are pretty distinct, they look like very dark cacuasoids. majority of them have the same facial features as white people.

I think the differences between different Indians are exaggerated by a few posters. Most Indians look similar, it's that some are a few shades lighter than others, and often it's very random. The lighter skinned Indians do not look different to darker Indians other than being biy lighter. Most of India's populations have been genetically isolated for many thousands of years and they have bred with each other in that time ane have gotten distinct look.

Oh please... personally I've only been mistaken for an Italian once (and was like ), a Black girl (says all) in college who thought that all South Asian looks like Apu from the Simpson, and was surprised that I don't fit the cliché. If she was just a bit aware of the different South Asian phenotypes she wouldn't say that.
But otherwise, I've yet to see an Italian-looking South Asian... perhaps a negligible proportion of North Indians/Pakistanis, but the only people who looks West Asian on average are the (Indian) Kashmiris. The rest - even about the North Indians/Pakistanis - well, sounds a bit naïve, but 'look like South Asians'.
